Should the Army consider making (1SG and MSgt)(SGM/ MGYSGT) two separate paths similar to the USMC?

We all know that some are better at the technical aspects of their specific MOS and some are better leaders. I understand it all but if those in the E-8 and E-9 grades are not great leaders then soldiers suffer. I severed in a unit that had a high turn over rate for 1SG. we had 2 out of four that were able to do a great job. Two of the four was a great men who i respect for their ability to lead and develop leaders. The other was more of a technical expert who knew about everything but developing soldiers and leaders. I asked this question because I have on active duty for almost 18yrs and have served in USN, USN with USMC, and now the Army. Each place did it differently for very specific reasons.

Never really thought about it. On the one hand, the way the Army does it ensures that our senior leaders are more well rounded. On the other, I can appreciate that the Marine Corps recognizes that some leaders are better at different things than others.

If we are going to go that route, why not bring back SPC 5-8 ranks? And SQT?
I firmly believe we need specialists who are just that, specialists. Not every MOS can have Warrant Officers to be the specialists in that specific field.

I agree with you on this. I know many kids who were leaders on the aircraft, but not anywhere else really. And thats all they wanted, they wanted to work on aircraft and not actually lead Soldiers in other aspects.

Thats a good question. I just dont think it would happen. You know the Army Loves to do more with less. Once you start making restrictions on slots, and promotions, it throws it all out of wack. Plus, as you know, a soldier needs to be able to do it all. That's what they pay you for. Great post!
