We really need Congress to get off their collective a$$es and allow DoD to conduct a real BRAC. There are literally 100s of facilities that should be closed.

In 2011, Fort Monroe was turned over to the Commonwealth of Virginia and the National Park Service. The Hampton Police Division is already putting the land to great use, training it's Officers, using the various facilities there. While it is sad to see a base with hundreds of years of history go, perhaps it's for the best. My hope is that more effort goes into preserving the history there, including opening up one of the Coastal Artillery batteries, and preserving it for future generations. The only detachment I see having a possible use there would be an EOD team to clear with the occasional bit of UXO washing up on the beach. Realistically though, there's no point in bring it back.
