Yesterday was the 70th anniversary of the United States using the first atomic bomb dropping it on Japan, many news organizations and individuals recognized this historic event. A post by one of my friends caught my eye “…why Japan had apologized for its wartime atrocities repeatedly, but the people of Japan had never received an apology for the dropping of two atomic bombs.” Should the United States apologize for the use of atomic weapons that ultimately ended World War II?

Ah NO - I think when you start a fight you better expect to get kicked in the nuts. While it might be a cheap shot so is a sucker punch.

An apology no, a "we regret we were forced to do it" more applicable

The Japanese primarily targeted American military, we targeted civilians, we should appreciate that, but also that we were forced into it.

No, and not for any obvious reasons. My feeling is that we saw a way of ending more warfare that would have killed more military and civilians alike. There comes a point that the toughest decisions need to be made and you can think about it a billion times before making that decision and once made you live with it. No apologies are ever going to be sincere enough, nor accepted.

Have they apologized for the Baton Death March or a score of other autrocities? I don't think so!

War is ugly. We were prevoked into war by them and their act of war. Once you decide to wage war, you accept responsibility for its consequences.

Do we apologize? HELL NO!!
Will our current leadership bow down and do it? Unfortunately, it's likely they will.

The Rape in Nanking? Korea and the comfort girls. It would have cost around 6 million lives had we not used the bomb, according to some reports.

No. Not at all. The atomic bombs dropped on Japan while taking many lives most likely saved countless more!

We're not the country who owes an apology to the world for doing a half assed sealing job of that Nuclear Reactor damaged in that Tsunami a few years back that's leaking still to this very day.

I need to look into this but I actually though we did apologize for this. Additionally Japan is just now getting around to apologizing for prisoner of war atrocities.

On either side, realistically, an apology is political.

I need to look into this more to have an educated answer but my gut feeling is that this is slightly reversed.

I'm completely wrong about us apologizing. The closest we've come is the current president personally apologizing to Japan.

Yes I read that the President was going to apologize but the Japanese government advised him NOT to. I did a quick search on the web about it because like you, I was under the impression that he did but actually didn't on behalf of the nation.
