We hear about how all these Vets are triple dipping, but I don't think people are educated on how hard it actually is to do this, and how very small of a percentage of people can qualify to do this.

You have to meet all of these requirements: Serve over 20 years, receive a 50% or more VA Rating, be deemed unemployable or 100% disabled by the VA, AND qualify for SSI benefits.

State pays disability if you're not a veteran but the VA (federal) pays you based off that fact and you can retire (federal) without getting either. They are all separate things that don't have much to do with each other. Any one that calls that triple dipping is pretty ignorant to what triple dipping is...

I'll never be against an honorable discharged vet getting as much as possible out of the government.

Unless you were working under the table, pretty much your entire life (minus that 20+ years you served in the military) you paid into social security, so I see zero reason why you shouldn't be eligible to receive it, retired military or otherwise.

As a military retirement pension, that was another promise made to you by your dear ol' Uncle Sam. But your same ol' dear uncle wants to re-negotiate the terms of deal? Uh-nuh.

IMO, if you paid into social security, you should be able to use it if you meet the conditions for receiving it. If you meet the qualifications for receiving a military pension, you should be able to use that as well. None of this "but only if you have a rating over 173% AND ONLY IF..." crap. You sacrificed a part of your paycheck and a whole lot more than that. You earned it.

All vets should be compensated for however they were destroyed while serving. If anyone who is found to be cheating the system should be crushed. There should be no tolerance or lenience. I know someone who was medically retired (for back problems) while attending college fill time under the degree completion program, thus incurring a 1/2 ADSO the whole time in school. Upon completing their degree, and retiring at 16 years, they started grad school and now regularly compete in marathons and CrossFit competitions.

I'm not saying they aren't injured, but I seriously question a medical evaluation enough to warrant retirement from someone that fit.

There is no one clear answer for or against, it is dependent on the context of each Veteran, their individual claim through the VA and any civilian working capabilities there after. Furthermore, if they meet the criteria to obtain SSDI along with Retiree Pension and VA Disability it should be no one else’s business or concern. Just because they receive Pension and VA disability doesn’t mean that they no longer qualify for SSDI. We have to remember the pension is for serving 20+ years, VA disability is compensation for injuries incurred during time is service, and SSDI is for when a person is unable to work due to injury (regardless of veteran status or not).

I thought triple dipping meant a military retirement, then working another 25 years, then collecting a second retirement, then collecting SSI.

This isn't easy to do, and anyone receiving it would probably give it up to have their body or mind back.

I’m doing it and I will take my health back anytime. Money doesn’t make up for what I lost. If you don’t like it, trade places, you might learn something....,,,,stop making assumptions.
