We hear about how all these Vets are triple dipping, but I don't think people are educated on how hard it actually is to do this, and how very small of a percentage of people can qualify to do this.

You have to meet all of these requirements: Serve over 20 years, receive a 50% or more VA Rating, be deemed unemployable or 100% disabled by the VA, AND qualify for SSI benefits.

I wish I get my 100% plus SSA and that's not a bad amount. But you will find it almost impossible to double ir triple dip. I joined the Guard after being medically retired and I also got a lump sum. As soon as I was qualified for my VA payments the government took every last dime until my lump sum was paid back and because my unit deployed to Afghanistan and I couldn't they pulled that reti

The system is against those that collect a military retirement check . Case in point a reservist gets hurt on drill serous enough that he gets VA benefits . He does his six years and gets out works his civilian job and still collets his VA benefits . VA doesn't take that money from his regular job but they take money from the military retirement check . Penalizing the retired military guy.

My opinion on this is, DISABILITY HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH RETIREMENT. TERM OF SERVICE IS RETIREMENT. INJURY IN THE SERVICE IS DISABILITY, PERIOD!

I am against triple dipping. A new decontaminated chip is required for each approach March into the dip slurry pond.

SGM Dawson, request an increase on your present rating. You might not get to 50% with the increase rating but at least it will be on your VA records. At 50% VA disability rating, you get your FULL military retirement pay plus your FULL VA disability pay, I know this for a fact because I'm at 50% and get both FULL pay! Keep going to your Veteran Service Officer to help you with your claim(s), the VA will NOT tell you everything you need to know to file a claim!

The problem is most people do investigate the facts of the situations before answering such complicated questions. The 3 areas involved with paying disabled veterans are totally separate operations in the US government. So the funding for each group of programs has pre-established requirements and a different set of reviewers to determine the level of compensation that will be given to each person who qualifies due to medical conditions. It is based on the individual soldier's service records, not by branch or missions their units were involved in the service. Active duty service is paid according to rank and positions and mission environments endured while in uniform; it is earned is not relevant to what an injured soldier receives by the VA medical councils' rating system after a through exam by their appointed physicians.

VA programs and funding are not connected to any DOD function. It is managed by the current President's cabinet appointee. The payments are distributed by separate checks and tax-exempt, but the retiree with a pension for 20 yrs of honorable service pays the disability portion out of their pension. So the medical benefits related to their military retirement is paid by them not the US government. Officers make 3 to 6 times in retirement what a SNCO does just like in active duty! Higher responsibilities and risks reap higher rewards. If you work with your commanders and staff long enough, you will realize why they get those bigger pensions!

VA system is influenced by the politicians of the times and we who have been in the system for decades can say the good and bad of the programs and how soldiers of every generation get a different set of benefits, Vietnam veterans got shafted and no other generation of soldiers can compare to the risks and damages done to those "drafted" forced to serve their nation and exposed to lethal chemicals and inhumane conditions and less than professional leaders in charge. Despite all those disadvantages, they survived and came home to ungrateful and a corrupt VA and education system who hid the truths of their medical conditions from everyone. It is sad but true! Even after 3 wars since the 1990's the way the veterans are treated by the Congress people is pathetic. The general public is clueless until it is one of their own family members who needs to get into the system to obtain the funds for medical care or access to specialists and then they recognize how poorly managed the VA system is and learn the truth of the backlogs and how disabled veterans have been seen as an burden on the US government and Congressional funds. But we never asked for special favors or treatment only what the DOD contracts promised. Except VA compensation and funding is not same as active duty or ANG or reserves receive for real military operations for national defense. It is a unique rehabilitation and education system developed by politicians and government administrators. So until the backlogs of entering all the War veterans who qualify for the benefits is complete. Allot of our injured soldiers will struggle with hardships while the general public continues to believe all is well for the veterans and their families and medical care is more than adequate. It has improved over the last few years but it will take many more years to catch =up to where it needs to be!
Last issue is eligibility to collect a check from SSA for full disability. Well that is another screwed-up system that politicians have taken liberties to give money to people who did nothing to earn the monthly checks. Those who actually need the funds due to genuine debilitating medical conditions are denied. By law, your disability pay is based on the last ten years of work, a person did and military service is a government employee job according to the SS regulations. The programs are well laid out on the SSA.gov site. People should know that spouses of active military duty member can also qualify for the disability even after they divorce. It is based on the time they were together. SS benefits are individually awarded not based on a family. So any number of family members can be collecting checks based on different programs. Social Security is a federal system managed by the US Treasury and other Federal Administration agencies.

Just a brief comment about veterans going to work after service on federal installations and in federal employment using veteran preference rating. Originally, the program was set-up to ensure employment for our returning soldiers in operations which require many of their military skills, but over the decades unions and civilians found ways to get non-military connected people and relatives jobs and educational benefits. The roles our contractors and GS workers do for DoD in conjunction with the active duty is serving in the defense and protection of our nation and the pay they earn is much higher than soldiers because it equates to what a person with college degrees working at a corporate job would be paid for the same duties and responsibilities. Until, the last few decades, our soldiers had very little higher education certifications or college degrees in the enlisted ranks. But the personnel were preforming the same positions active duty as their collegiate counterparts.

I was delusional when I first got out of the USAF in 2010 and thought our veterans systems and pay was proper, but I soon learned the truths about the Government cover-up of how little was made available to all who served. Who would expect their own government elites in Washington DC to intentionally withhold money and find ways to deny benefits so they could keep the money for their own pockets and let our honorable soldiers die or continue to suffer from their traumas or wounds for decades without adequate care. They built all these VA Hospitals and Senators were there endorsing and taking bows for each building, but few knew it was a lie, several of the VA hospital areas did not meet code and had to be redone before they could be opened and utilized and so small clinics had to take the load.

Now you can all see how the veterans have been treated was not right or fair but the public let it happen and still believe the propaganda of politicians in DC and state legislatures of the double & triple dipping concepts. They are great at appearing caring and displaying Hollywood and music celebrities on their support of our injured veterans, who lie about how much their billion dollar tax -exempt charities are paying for the services they promote! I learned this the hard-way too and am no longer blind to the facts! So who started this conversion? Soldiers or people who want military and veteran families to be distracted divided fight among themselves and never learn the truths about their elected leaders and their appointees?
