Since I did 5 years active duty and got out as an E5, can I go down to E4, given the current RCP, or will I have to come back as an E5?

So, I’m trying to get back in the Army after a 9 year break. I did 5 years active duty and got out as an E5. Can I go down to E4 with the current RCP right now or will I have to come back as an E5? My recruiter isn’t telling me anything even after I’ve asked and he’s my 3rd one! I only want to reduce in rank because there are more openings for PS there. Any help?

My recommendation is to have your recruiter to submit a waiver for you to retain your E5. In the long run it’ll be better for you. Coming back in as a E4 places limitation on time in service right from the beginning. Even though you come back in motivated to serve, you shouldn’t want to come in with RCP hanging over your head. Hey even if there's more openings on paper it's all on what the Army needs that day you go to meps. Good luck, hope you don't get 13M as an only option. Like many have, I'm one of the unfortunate.

The new prior service business rules have been updated this month. Just Google prior service business rules and you will see. If I remember right going down in rank is not allowed right now. There is a list of critical needs MOS you can see, but it's all about what's available at MEPS that day. Good luck.

You dont get this choice. They will do a grade determination on you. if you went to PLDC, WLC, or BLC, you will keep E5. Also, you dont pick your job as a prior service applicant. 9 times out of ten, if the Army has a slot open for your MOS, that's where you are going. The other 1 out of 10 will get their jobs based on needs of the Army. the only choice you get is whether to take it or leave it.
