I earned many whoppins when I was younger.
However, I don't think it is a "one-size fits all" solution. Where myself and younger brother required spankings to keep us in line because we pushed the limits, the same did not work with my youngest brother and sister. Talking worked with them. For me, and for some (physical) "Pain Retains!" For others pain may be administered through stern discussions or forfeit of privileges. Effective punishment is dependent to what the recipient responds that alters or makes aware their negative behavior.

MSgt Daniel Attilio,

I was spanked, whipped or whatever politically correct word we want to use, I believe it helped me become the person I am today. I will admit that my children don't get spanked as much as I did and I do try to talk first but if that doesn't seem to work, I have no problem laying the rod of correction on them.

SSG Audwin Scott - My parents gave verbal warnings too, but that just didn't take for me. I know I am a better person because my parents were strict and did not condone or allow my youthful stupidity to go unchecked. They even made sure to allow the teachers to administer spankings as needed. Wooden paddles, I remember the wooden paddles.
At my retirement ceremony I thanked my parents for not leaving me in the woods and driving off when I was younger, because that is what I would have done with me. I was a hellion and I owe them more than I'll ever be able to repay.
