Please don't be that Gear-Do PX Ranger Private that wastes all the paycheck on unnecessary gear/equipment.

Sort of related, but at Basic we were tasked with making platoon shirts (for graduation) and picking a design and had all our names on it.

Then, the vendor that did the shirts also had all sorts of crap we could additionally buy. Various shirts, various hoodies, etc............ Some kids bought over $700 of crap. Good Lord............

CPT (Join to see) And yet Army Officers still allow those leeches into the BCT Company areas to shill their wares. AND mandate the Trainees to attend. I hold the Officers and Senior NCO’s more accountable for opening those young trainees up to that “crap”.

SGT (Join to see) - Amen. I was a OSUT company commander long time ago. I didn't understand the shill that these vendors worked. I finally figured it out in my last 6 months. Pissed my Drill Sergeants off when they had to buy the "required" PT gear. It was amazing how cheap the company PT gear became. This was before the Army PT gear.

jeez. I remember being excited if a gut truck rolled around...it was quite rare.
That was our PXtra bonus entertainment and excitement. Once a week was rare.

Only commanders can make that call, and no commander is going to bless off on accepting the risk associated with allowing uncertified protective gear. The DOD spends billions of dollars ensuring your issued PPE meets certain requirements. Unless a proponent who is authorized make the assessment states that a piece of gear is safe - it's not. If you were to get hurt wearing that gear, whether it has anything to do with the helmet or not, your entire chain of command would be relieved. Like, from your squad leader to your battalion commander, depending on how bad it is.

Team Wendy’s meet all of the standards and are “certified” and are actually issued by numerous DOD units.

My advice to you is to use the equipment that the Army issues you. There are some things that you can add to your kit, but when it comes to items like this use what you're given.

Looking at it from a financial point of view why would you want to spend money on an item that is issued to you? If it becomes damaged some how you're unlikely to be reimbursed for it. (Those helmets run about $1,200)

The only thing issued I run is my rifle, peq, and optic. My personal kit suits me far better than the issued garbage I've been given. I'm faster on reloads, have greater operational endurance, my pvs14 is far more secured on my helmet using a dovetail mount compared to the bayonete style mount, and since my peltors integrate with my comms, I can both send and receive messages with greater clarity if I was to only use issued equipment. There absolutely is a place for using personal equipment over issued.
But I only recommend to my Joe's to spend their money on it if they plan making a career out of the military.
All that being said, it makes sense for me considering I run a gun for my job as an infantry squad leader. Now a commo private on the other hand....

SFC (Join to see) Unfortunately, there is a reason that the Army uses that $300 helmet for standard issue and the Wendy’s (et al) for special issue. They are far superior to the standard ACH in every way. Maybe someday they will shift from the cheapest bidder stuff to actual stuff that will help give their Joes the edge. Probably not though. We’d rather spend tons of money on all other sorts of nonsense than that “PX Ranger” stuff…

PO2 Ricky L. Isreal Unfortunately, that was the prevailing thought for many years. The military seems to be realizing that it’s harder and harder to recruit people to be “bullet catchers” and they are having to do thing like offer enlistment bonuses at levels I’ve never seen before. I had heard of 60-80k for infantry. At some point the DOD is gonna start realizing that maybe we need to “protect our investments” a little more and get them equipment that helps them do their job just a little better… That’s my hope anyways.
