I'm a medic attached to a squadron out of the tenth cavalry regiment, and I just earned my spurs. As a spur holder I'm planning on getting a Stetson for all official cav functions, my only issue is the price I'm seeing some that are close to two hundred dollars, as a pfc I make enough to support my family but two hundred dollars on an optional piece of uniform just won't work. Anyone on here have a more economical way of buying the "Cav Hat"?

Did you try the Big R farm supply store up near Babbitt Rd (right before monument exit)?

If you drive up I 25 North, it is off the Babbitt Rd exit (after Exit 156). You will see it from the hwy on the right side. Struthers and Spanish Bit Dr.

Tuesday is their military discount day I think. They can also shape it if they have them.

No worries. Big R was a recent discovery not too far from where I live. I will be buying a rifle and ammo there soon. They may not have the particular Stetson in stock but they might get a deal on one or him.

Thank you very much Sir! They look kinda silly to be honest but there's so much history behind it. I'd like to uphold the cav traditions I'll be earning my gold Spurs here to pretty soon.

So my former PSG says that what you're seeing is pretty much the going rate, unless you can find a shop that's going out of business and selling them cheap.

He also said you really need to buy in person so you can check fit.

Thank you for checking Sir, I figured that would be the answer I might just have to find a knock off "Cav Hat" that's a bit more affordable and then save up for the stetson.

Actually most good felt cowboy hats are pretty expensive. But you might find a cheaper alternative.

I guess I can complain you can't argue with all the history behind it just means I need to save up a little bit.

PFC Davis, you will only ever need to buy one. Still have the same one 20 years later, hanging in my office over my spur certificate.

Get off post to a western wear store. I'd suggest a collapsible, as they're more forgiving. I flew mine rolled up in an assault pack to a recent gig. It cost me around $75 for the hat.

And definitely, since you will be buying acorns anyway, get them in maroon...

Genuine Stetsons are expensive. But fortunately, there are cheaper alternatives. Any felt, black cowboy hat can pass as a Cavalry Stetson when gussied up with cords and other insignia.

And congrats on earning your Spurs trooper!

The most affordable way that I have found is through the Crossed Sabers Cav Store at Ft. Hood

Shop around. My units never bought bland-named "Stetsons", but found a local supplier who was always were happy to make them forus.
It has the advantage of a supply of headgear you can complain to the haverdasher direct and get it fitted to your head. Instead of weeks of headaches, it slides right on since they measured your head. Tthey are less expensive for the troopers.
Another thing that resulted overseas is we also found a REAL Tailor that made our Dress Blues at about 20% what it cost anywhere else. He was happy to see us also and alterations were free.
