I spent a LOT of time there from 88-91. 6 - 8 months out of each year. Long story. I'll spell it wrong, but palisades seems to come to mind after all these years. Supported 3 inf brigades (1 training there at all times) for 3 years. I'm really interested to know if it's still up and running. I'm just curious what happened to it after they closed planet Ord and moved it to Ft Lewis.

totally awesome. Did the ground squirrels or whatever they are called ever come back? When I first visited there were many, many of them. Herds. Then, a year or two later, some kind of disease came through and wiped almost all of them out. How about Camp Roberts down the road? Is it still doing it's thing? I imagine it is still up and running simply due to some of the things I used to transport to and from there. That's about all I'll say about that. I'd love to get my hands on some Liggett anything. Web page or anything for there? When I was there, there was only a store where you turn to go in the main gate and that was it for miles around. Population was some number like 6 or something, might have been more, but was some low number. I forget the name of the township.

Ft. Hunter Liggett is one largest in geographic-area Joint Military Bases on the West Coast of Central California, providing Active, Guard & Reserve Training Opportunities year-round. The Ft. Hunter Liggett & Camp Roberts also service as deployment training & certification centers, providing mission-critical and valuable Unit to Command Level Training specific to theater operations.
Ft. Hunter Liggett is also home to a California Mission, founded in 1776 by the Spanish and is still an active Catholic Parish Community. Ft. Hunter Liggett was also part of the original Hurst Ranch used by the family for raising cattle and hunting prior to being turned into a Military Reservation.

In my training time there, I supported Americans (Marines & Army) 1/1 marines, good guys. British soldiers. Canadian soldiers. Aussie soldiers. Etc... Like I originally stated, I spent many, many MONTHS on both, Roberts and Liggett. Many of my fellow soldiers from the 7th ID out of Ord did back in the day. I've been all over both training grounds many, many times. I'm happy to know it's still in use, that's all. Did the gopher population ever come back? In the late 80's to early 90's something happened to them and there went from thousands of them critters to almost non in a very short time. Some disease got them. And yeah, when I was there, the cattle free roamed in certain areas. Beautiful patch of land. Hard to appreciate though when you're at work on it. Looking back at it now, I appreciate it more and more.
