The "right" to serve, or the "privilege" to serve?

With all the discussions about the "rights" of individuals what are your thoughts. Growing up in the 70-80's we had this concept ingrained in our hearts: "ASK NOT WHAT YOUR COUNTRY CAN DO FOR YOU, BUT WHAT YOU CAN DO FOR YOUR COUNTRY!" It seemed the thing to do today is to ask what can my "Army" do for me?

It was a privilege to have served. No one has the "right". It smacks of entitlement .

Sherry that very question demonstrates your nobility of Character. That also explains my attitude to service for our country. "Uncle Sam I'm not here to tell you where and how to use me. I only ask that you USE ME in whatever capacity I may serve!" It doesn't matter who does the job as long as the job gets done! We have a responsibility to ensure the job gets done.

You have a right to try and join by going to the recruiter's office and asking. From MEPS on it's essentially a privilege as they don't HAVE to spend the money on you.

It's a privilege. It's your right to volunteer, but not everyone will qualify. Standards are a valuable tool for operational readiness.

I feel that it is a privilege to serve not a right. In the first 10 amendments of the U.S. Constitution, the Bill of Rights it does not state anywhere that it is a right to serve in the U.S. Armed Forces.

Yes Sir we do under the 9th Amend. But Sir I am not an attorney. Is there case law regarding this issue I do not know. I still feel that it is a privilege to serve.
