I'm in a union. I was our local president for 4 years prior to my promotion... Unions are necessary in police work to protect the officer. All the seniority you speak of... Well... Same with the PD. Shift bids, OT, vehicle assignment, special details, vacation, etc.. By seniority.
The upside to the police union is the "legal defense fund" which offers police counsel in the event they are the target of an investigation. Frivolously lawsuits are a part of the culture. At times a boss who "has it out for a guy" will write him up for something petty that the same bosses friend did the day before and it was a joking matter then. Unions can have a positive effect and negative effect because as a president I had to defend guys who really didn't deserve it. The same guys ALWAYS in trouble. When it's the same one all the time, well, usually there is some merit to the complaints. I am a proud member of my Union and anyone leaving the military that has the opportunity to work a job with union protection, I suggest give it some strong consideration... It's probably not a job you want to close the door on!!

I absolutely agree with your comments, CPO (Join to see). The consistent and ever-present support from the bargaining unit is truly welcome and irreplaceable in today's "rush to judgement" work environment.

One of my best friends is a local police officer, and his monthly horror stories of some cop some where needing legal support from the bargaining unit (usually from a "wrongly" accused citizen) scares the snot of me!

Thanks for going out there every day and standing between us and The Dark. You'll never know how much MOST of us admire, appreciate and rely on you folks! I pray every day for the safety of those out there "on the line".

The civilian Nuclear power industry is very regulated therefore I am sure it provides a rigid structure just like the military. Yet, with that said this was a very informative article and provided me with a different perspective on Collective Bargaining.

I'm glad I hit my mark, LCDR (Join to see). I always felt that a little more info from someone actually working in the industry would have helped me SIGNIFICANTLY with my transition.

Thank you, sir!
