I know this is very vague, but the reason I ask is that while working on a recent project I was talking to an NCO at a nearby ARNG Cav Unit and the topic of Stetson's, etc. came up. The person I was talking to got very disgruntled and said they were Infantry. Color me confused. Is there someone who can help me out?

SPC Darin Day I for one have learned something as a result of yr question so thanks for putting it out there. Here on RP a person can ask just about anything in good faith without concern about being slammed like on fb.

Well let me lay the facts down. Yes there are pure Cavalry Organizations. However, the majority of the Cavalry Squadrons are now found in Light Infantry Brigades. Yes, there is a lot of animosity between 19 and 11 series folks, just like you encountered with the National Guard NCO. There always will be tension between the two. Now if you want to find pure Cavalry Squadrons, they can still be found at Fort Hood, Fort Carson, and I believe Fort Bliss. The HBCTs or better known as Heavy Brigade Combat Teams are located there. Korea used to have 4/7 CAV but it is now a rotational unit. Hope that answers your question. Scouts Out!

SPC Darin Day, going to respond here first and then post somewhere else as well. There isn't a single "Cavalry unit," comprised of 19D's. A Cavalry Troop or Squadron is just like any other unit in the Army. It has mortars (11C), supply specialists (92Y), HUMINT (35M), and a bunch of others. The ones that SFC (Join to see) describes, above aren't 19D pure either. 1st Cavalry Division isn't really a Cavalry Division either. It's an Armored Division. All of its combat subordinates are ABCT's. Being a real Cavalry organization requires a specific mission set focused on reconnaissance and security operations. The ONLY units with this mission set right now are in every BCT in the Army...the Cavalry Squadron. Even then, those Squadrons have 11C's, 92Y's, 35F's, and the same cast of characters it takes to run any other Battalion sized organization. Now...the entire unit is Cavalry. They are all authorized by the Squadron Commander to wear a Stetson and can earn their Spurs. It's up to the Commander and the CSM to instill the command climate and esprit de' corps necessary to bring all the non-19D MOS's into the fold. A Cavalry organization is not about an MOS. It is a mission that defines them. They will be forward of everyone else. They will be stretched to their communications and supply and medical capability. They will depend on each other to survive. When you can get an entire unit wearing the Stetson, even the infantry...you know you've done your job.

No. Cav units have infantry, mortars, whatever, and support like any other unit. Even Cav units like 3d and 2nd CR are mostly infantry.

Same thing. A Cav squadron is just a battalion sized element. Companies made of infantry or Cav, maybe an anti tank company, and an HHT

SPC Darin Day, SFC (Join to see); the Cavalry Squadron in the Brigade Combat Team (Stryker Brigade Combat Team for the 3d and 2d CR) are mostly 19D. SGT Armstrong is correct that the 3 infantry battalions are mostly 11B.

When I was 4/12 CAV and 3/1. We had no infantry. Yes, we had a mortar platoon and your normal support but infantry belonged to the brigade not the Cav
