Washington. He was appointed as the General of the Armies by the Continental Congress. While on one hand you could say he was an opportunist, he had a huge challenge of leading a poorly funded largely militia army against the well funded British Army and Mercenaries. Yes, France helped us win independence, but Washington was the one who kept the Colonial Army together, eventually routing a great Britain.

I want to say Lincoln's highest rank was actually Captain.

TSgt Joshua Copeland Correct. He was a Captain during the Black-Hawk War. He later re-enlisted but as a private.

This was also at a time when Officer positions in Militias were often elected, appointed, or purchased rather than promoted.

TSgt Joshua Copeland Correct again. Lincoln had zero military experience when he became the Captain of his Company. He was appointed to the position by receiving the most votes by members of the company.
