WASHINGTON — If the Chinese invaded the Senkaku Islands, U.S. Marines in the Pacific could recapture them, the commander of Marines in Japan said Friday.

The Senkakus have been administered by Japan for decades, but China now claims sovereignty over them. Amid other heated territorial disputes with its neighbors, China has deployed naval assets near the Senkakus in recent months.

We may have the capability to retake the Senkakus, but do we want to go to war with China?  No.  Do they know that?  Yes.  They are flexing their muscles because Russia just showed the world that it could annex another country (Or part thereof) and get away with it.  China knows we aren't go to war with them so they are looking to do the same... though, they would be inviting much more trouble that Russia.  With China's growing trade, they would suffer considerably from sanctions, much more so than Russia.
