What does the process look like to switch from NG to the Reserves? Can I pick my unit and will I have more schooling opportunities?

I've been a 2LT for almost 3 years because of fedrec and I'd like to switch to the reserves when my 6 year service obligation is up. What does the process look like for this as an officer? Could I also pick and choose what unit i want to go to or is it purely based on slot availability? Does the reserves have more opportunities to go to schools?

Talk to a Reserve officer recruiter to help you with a conditional release DD from 368. You don’t necessarily need to wait until your obligation is complete but completion would make the process easier. As stated by CPT Lawrence Cable the Guard is much easier to pick and choose a unit. In the Reserves it would depend on where they need you. My son lives in Washington State and was assigned to a unit in Ohio. He eventually got back to Washington when a slot opened up.
As for opportunities for schools I think would depend on the unit you’re assigned and your MOS.

technically, you don't control the choice as much as in the Guard, but the number of choices is a lot bigger in the Army Reserve. You may have to be willing to travel to take advantage of the multi state positions. Other than that, you will need a conditional release signed off by the first General in your chain, or the AG in a lot of states. You do not have to wait for the end of your service obligation.
