Within the USCG, Information System Technicians are subjected to a wide range of experience. We train and implement the necessary skills to support our unit's missions through system/network administration, telecommunication, SATCOM, radio, general announcing systems, security systems, etc. Most become great at a lot but not necessarily experts at anything. So, if you were forced to transition to civilian employment, how would you determine a specific area or specialty to target for your next career?

If I where you, I would look into the Sys Admin field. I know someone who is looking for a Sys Admin for a CTR at NASA. I think the Contract is through Booz Allen but I am not 100% sure. I will give you a call and discuss the details with you.

First, ask yourself, what aspect of your current IT job do you like best? What are you best at doing? Where do you want to live and work, etc...

There are many opportunities today in Sys Admin, Cyber Security, network,Security, etc... If you wish to continue in the Govt arena ensue your Security Clnc is up to date, that you have your current security access systatus up to date and obtain any certifications you can be for you separate (e.g. In no special order, Network+, Security+, CCNA, ITIL, COBIT, etc...). Start writing and rewriting your resume focusing on what you accomplished, scope and impact.

Best wishes for your futur success.
