The cheapest free service is the Vet Service Officer at any VFW, American Legion Post. They are trained by the VA annually, and being Vets and not getting a cut of your settlement are interested in helping you

SPC Frank Montalbano - You'll want to connect with your local state's Department of Veterans Affairs* as well.

Your state's DVA is usually the most up-to-date regarding state specific benefits, programs and services available to veterans (both with and without disabilities).

I'd definitely stick with your states DVA and County VSO. I didn't know I even qualified for benefits until the age of 54 (I'm 62 now). I was put in touch with my local VSO who was fantastic. It took several years of perseverance and several C&P exams, along with a couple of appeals, but in the end it was well worth it. Be very careful about what you see on the web, etc. as most of these are scams and have a lot of small print requiring a veteran to fork over several thousand dollars after winning their claim to these 'companies' for the small relatively small amount of 'actual work' they perform (they are not registered with the DVA either), just a cautionary bit of information going forward! You could also try your closest DAV (Disabled American Veterans) post. Again, free counseling and assistance with claim prep and filing.

Disability ratings are based on severity of disability. 38 USC specifies the degrees of nearly every illness or injury known to the human race. A rating is increased when a Veteran moves from one level of disability to the next higher level.
