Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump said that the United States should send ground troops into Iraq to fight the Islamic State of Iraq and Greater Syria (ISIS) and use funds from seized oil fields to pay for veteran's services.

"You go and knock the hell out of the oil, take back the oil," he said on Sunday during an interview with Meet the Press. "We're going to have so much money."
What are your thoughts? You know, if The Donald keeps this up, I might have to vote for him. (But that's just my thoughts)

There has to be another way to fight the ideology than boots on ground but I'll be dammed if I have the answer

Let's send all the immigrants he plans in deporting over there to fight his land war so they can become citizens?! The Trump foreign legion! I can see him now wearing white fez hat, the khakis riding a camel...Charge!

MSgt Michelle Mondia I have spoken out that the immigrants should shoulder right alongside with American citizens this fight. All of the immigrants discussions are not saying anything about joining the US military while I am a refugee or immigrant to demonstrate desire to be a citizen.

I don't really understand why everybody keeps saying this guy is a breath of fresh air, seems like a politician to me; he is a master of self-promotion, and talking. Like it or not Hillary Clinton is laying out plans of how she proposes to administer the federal government, while this guy is proposing that we invade Iraq, and the oil will pay for it... I don't know if anybody realizes that this is not a particularly fresh idea

He failed to go to Nam, but he will send the children of others.....I might get in trouble for this but.... F*** Trump, he is not a leader and if he gets the nomination, well we are all screwed. Getting press because he says what others won't. Where is the GOP leadership, why is this "Hair Piece" making them all look stupid.

The GOP leadership didn't pick him... which is why he is doing so well. He isn't a member of the establishment and it shows. He would join a long list of politicians that received education deferments during Vietnam as well.

You have to stop looking at the republican party for a force of change, they're just as interested in keeping D.C. the way it is as the other party because it lines their pockets too. Each party has a few true fighters that want to change things but the majority of politicians are careerist that enjoy their lifestyle.

Sgt David G Duchesneau - Sergeant; I have a bit of a problem with a foreign policy based on "What the hell, let's go off and conquer someone else's country and steal their resources."

It is interesting to see his business mindset in play here though. This is how Trump would view the solution to problems if he had control of his own military. "How can I take over this country with the simplest way possible? I'll send a few thousand soldiers into that building and tell them I am in charge now." Not necessarily great for foreign policy doctrine, but the Romans would have loved him. "Conquer or Die."

1LT (Join to see) - Lieutenant; The analogy is good.

Mind you, the Romans also did a lot of dying.

A point to consider is that, although the Romans were (essentially) engaged in "asymmetrical warfare" the difference between the two sides was not so great that the Roman technology wasn't largely negated most of the time.

Point considered Sir, the Romans also didn't have to answer to an angry, coddled, and unaware population that paints a black white view on every international issue.

The Roman war construct was a thing of beauty in a classical sense, but that mindset doesn't work in a modern world where there are legal and moral issues in every action to consider. The Romans legal and moral justification was basically, "We want this, it is ours now. You can play with us, or you can die."

1LT (Join to see) - Lieutenant; While it is true that the Romans didn't have to answer to an angry coddled and unaware population they had to answer to an unaware and coddled population who insisted on entertainment that mimicked real life and free food, clothing, and housing while not being forced into the Roman military and which rioted when it didn't get its way.

OK, so maybe the Romans DID have to answer to an angry, coddled, and unaware population.

Strangely enough the Roman legal and moral justification you cite is STILL in use today. The difference is that modern governments attempt to get the people who have things they want to give those things to them without ACTUALLY having to use direct military force to get them. Rather than invade a country, it's "economically sounder" to pay some of that country's corrupt political/military people to stage a coup and toss out the guys you don't like in favour of people who will do your bidding as long as you let them loot the country.

Besides, if you do that, then you don't have to deal with grieving families (in your country) because there were no casualties (from your country).

I think it's long past time that we had a President who thought this way. Our country has been reactive when it should have be proactive. I hope whoever our next POTUS is, he will have that "go-getter" attitude !!
