Unit Mascots: The Rough Riders noted they had a mountain lion with an "infernal temper". So what happened to unit mascots?

Do unit mascots still exist? Will they help with PTSD?

Last unit mascot I had in a unit was when I was in Korea. CDR had a cute puppy that went everywhere the unit did. Dog had it made..lol.
As far as dogs/pets to help with PTSD. IMO absolutely!! I've got 2 Boxers(had them since they been pups). They are very intelligent animals and know when I'm having a bad day/not feeling well. They stay by my side. Bad thing is they still think they're lap dogs and need to be in my lazy boy with me..lol. Problem is they are both 60+ lbs each...lol

SFC (Join to see) 1954/55 in Korea, we had dogs for mascots. Until they had grown enough for the black market!

SFC (Join to see) - Really, there is still a black market in Korea? From the G-2 I see; the commodities of that market have changed in the past 60 years.

Don't know about these days, but it was alive and kicking when I was there. CSM Charles Hayden

CPT (Join to see) great question, we used to have an Airborne Dog, our commander showed us in front of formation and made a parachute jump back in 1992. He used to go on PT runs with us and teach us mental toughness and loyalty to the unit. I know they are good for PTSD, my Wounded Warrior Brother/Sisters have service dogs and they are so happy.

I've heard a lot of stories like these, I feel they are great team builders/unit comradery but I don't see it much, if at all these days. (minus the service dogs of course)
