I Volunteer with several groups, both with my American Legion Post 350 helping with community affairs, raising funds for our local War Veterans home. I also Volunteer my time cooking for local 501-C3's with other members of my Post and other Veterans. During Mardi Gras we help feed local police breakfast and lunch over the last weekend of Mardi Gras. Feels good to give back. The people I do this with are the best in the world.

I decided to help other veterans and my community by running for office 4 years ago. Since holding office as a NH State Representative, I have gotten several good pieces of veteran friendly legislation passed to help other vets. Two years ago I authored a bill that was signed into law that gives the children of 100% disabled vets tuition free education at all NH State and Community Colleges. This year I updated that law to make sure if the vet passed away before the children got to college, that they would still be eligible. I guess I would say that my advice is to be the change you want to see. Get involved, make a plan and see it through.

My legion post does that with our boy scout troop that we sponsor for Memorial Day.
It's good to see the kids get involved and interact with our Veterans and teach them a bit what the days means.

I help veterans apply for benefits. This can be very time consuming but I really enjoy seeing their faces when they get the benefits that that they have earned.

I volunteer for the Healing Warrior Hearts retreats in Milwaukee and Houston. A fellow Veteran referred me to this program to process the depression, anxiety and PTSD caused by the military sexual trauma (MST) I'd experienced. That retreat in 2016 was so transformational that I have now been a volunteer staff member, supervisor or instructor for over 70 retreats. I share my story of MST and trauma recovery in many venues to inspire others to reach out for help. I further support these free retreats for Veterans (Healing Warrior Hearts) by recruiting the staff, doing presentations and staffing resource tables. Currently, I'm president of the Starfish Foundation (http://www.starfishfound.org) that raises funds to produce the retreats. This extremely rewarding volunteer work has become my life mission. Feel free to contact me at [login to see] for more information about participating in a retreat, as a Veteran Participant or Volunteer.

I'm an Army veteran. I served a tour in Vietnam and also in Asmara, Ethiopia. I retired from Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights, Illinois after 30 years. With time on my hands I began volunteering at our local hospital in Winfield, Illinois called Central DuPage Hospital, now part of Northwestern Medicine. This started in 2013 and I am there two days a week. As of this time I have received a 2000 hour pin for my effort. In 2018, I received the Volunteer ICARE Award from Northwestern Medicine for "with sincere appreciation for my commitment to service excellence at CDH". It's a gratifying experience and provides a sense of satisfaction helping others.

I'm retired and get to travel a lot. I always make a point to stop and have lunch at the local VFW. I get to meet and here so many veterans stories. What a blessing

When I was in the 131 MASH, we did, "Stand Down Tampa Bay". We would give physicals, dental work, haircuts, food, clothing. We even had a court so vets with outstanding warrants could take care of them, lawyers, judges and all. When the army disbanded MASH units it stopped.
