Waiting until your final assignment to buy a house? Wise or waste of BAH over the years?

After 15+ years in the Army I am about to buy my first home at what, I hope, is my last assignment. How many of you have done this? What are your thoughts on waiting until your retirement assignment v/s buying at each assignment?

We're waiting until I at least my 10 year AD. Only thing is my job is more flexible than his. Me being 3A and him being 2A. Plus he wants Utah and I'm saying Florida.

I didn't buy my first house until my last assignment. I thought I was going to stay there for a good long while but life happened and I took a job out of state. I sold that house and bought one in my new state.
But yes, I would wait until my last duty station to buy a place, unless you're into "flipping" houses. That's just my opinion though. I believe buying at every location is a waste of money.

This is a case by case basis based on the real estate market in a given area. There are some duty stations where you can buy a house, and sell it in three years breaking even or making a little money. However, there are duty stations where you can wind up in serious debt or having to maintain the house as a rental--which can have an impact on your credit. My opinion: it all depends on the market, current economy, and strength of personal finances.
