Was to get promoted after a MSG retired at BN, but now I can't move up due to BN saying they are over strength. What other options do I have?

First, as an E-7 by know you should know nothing is guaranteed.
Second, how in this day an age of promotion lists, were you going to get a promotion in a unit that is overstretched.
Third, your a senior NCO and don't know how promotions work?
Fourth, again we are all assuming you are NG, how many miles did you say you would travel? If you put down that you didn't want to travel, you are going to be sitting around till next promotion cycle so you can adjust your travel distance.
Fifth, if you are indeed NG, you can't wear a (P) because you haven't been offered a slot.

Yes i am NG; as a senior NCO i am fully aware of how EPS works. I chose unlimited on my 4100 and was NO. 1 on the promotion list. I knew better than to get my hopes up; however when the list came out 3 months ago no one even at BN had stated they were over strength on E8 up at BN they informed me once said MSG retired they would offer me the position. So my frustration lies with the system i reviewed AR 600-8-6 and cant figure how they double slotted a position. With that being said i should have been offered the position once said MSG retired. As for the (P) on my profile in the NG you can not put that on EES for NCOER............... on here it does not matter. Thanks for the input.

You reading the wrong regulation, don't read Army Regulation 600-8-6, it has little to do with NG promotions, you need to read the NG version, it becomes clearer. Also check you units MTOE, what once had a slot most likely got downgraded, in which case someone got over slotted.

Yes i was thinking of going that route............... however i have two years to retire if i dont get med ret. So if they do not figure out shuffling of personnel then i will go ahead with that POA regardless if i can make E8 or not if not med ret. Thank you.

Honestly, you have 3: Wait, Move units, IRR.
Wait is a crap shoot. No way to advice when/if the manning for the BN will change.
I should point out that (Not knowing CO NG's structure) that "move" might well entail "to another state NG" or "to the USAR." In theory, it could also entail "to another MOS", though I don't think that's something I would pursue.
I should point out that I don't know if ING will work like IRR, but I would bet not, based on my understanding of it.
Separately, you can chose to pursue the "over strength" statement. Is it strength that matters, or being primary in a slot at the next higher grade? I typed a lot more text here, but it was speculation, not actual knowledge, so I deleted it - you'll want to check with a personnelist who is schooled in the promotion system.

With the guard, it depends on where he is on the order of merit list for E7s. He won’t get promoted until there is an open billet and he is at the top of the list. During this time of year the MTOEs of most units are changing so it’s a possibility that previous positions don’t exist this year.

Yes i am No1 on the promotion list. My understanding after reviewing AR 600-8-6 is they can not double-slot if they have an approved MTOE; the only way this happens is if the MTOE is pending.
