One of the investigations recommendations from last year's Ft Hood shooting is to require all Soldiers to register privately owned weapons, not just those brought into post.

LTC (Join to see) everybase I was stationed at the requirement was to register your guns with the base, even if you lived off base

LTC (Join to see) I was only stationed on Navy installations so I cannot speak for what other branches required. I know that at Bangor Submarine Base, WA, Everett Naval Station, WA, Bremerton Naval Station, WA, Little Creek Amphibious Base, VA, and Norfolk Naval Station, VA they all had the same regulations. If you owned guns whether living in base housing or off base they required you to register your guns with the installations. If you were caught without doing so it was a massable offense.

PO2 William Allen Crowder a lot changed after 9/11. Once that happened most of the Naval installations changed their requirements. But like I stated... it was only if you got caught. Knew plenty of Sailors like you :)

PO2 Stephen Brinkley (Scott), fascinating!
To me this is an infringement of rights (I know we all give up some while in the military), but I'm interested in more info.
I'll do some searches based on the info you posted. Do you have any additional information that would help my searches?

I don't know, LTC (Join to see). That measure might appease the gun control crowd, but I wonder if it would stop things like the Fort Hood shooting? I'm guessing maybe not, at least not in all cases. While I'm a pro-gun guy, I don't have a problem with registering weapons, so I like the idea. I just question the end effect it will have.

When I was at Hood in the early 90s, one of the CGs tried to have everyone within a certain distance from Hood register their POWs. It was met with significant resistance and he rescinded his plan.
I always presumed it was because his plan did not meet legal requirements, but perhaps there was more I didn't see back then.
