Only when necessary. Most were well trained, knew their job and did it very well. There are always a few that either couldn't or wouldn't catch on and do what was expected/required. Those folks received a lot of unwanted attention and either got in alignment or were shown the door. When I was a PFC/Lance Corporal I viewed one of my responsibilities to be making my NCO's/Staff NCO's and Officers job easier by ensuring they didn't have to worry about me executing well.

Because the Marine Corps does a pretty good job screening for the right people the percentage of shit birds, ne'r do wells and the like were relatively small but they are there. The NCO's job is to correct or help move them along (out of the Marine Corps).

I had an XO who held all NCOs responsible for everyone in their platoon or squad . He did take away some stripes so that got my attention..

Kind of a mix.
As an E-4 not so much, no one really listens to you.
As an E-5, I grew a pair and had fun with the rank (Rate). I was real inventive with punishments.

We had a real Old Gunny in charge of our barracks at Camp Geiger who would lift our mattresses and check the springs with white gloves and if he found any dirt on his gloves he would pull our liberty card and restrict us to the base on weekends and give us extra duty. He was the worse hardass I had. But we accepted this because this guy was on Wake Island and spent four years hauling coal in northern Japan & in Korea he was captured at the Choisin but escaped from the train he was on. He taught a class on survival as a POW and so we never complained. He also spent every night alone in the Staff NCO club drinking heavily & we all felt sorry for this guy & if he got to us, it was no big deal .

Couple of sea stories. While attending a training course as an E-5, I had about 200 young sailors to lead. One day, one asked by why I just didn't offer to go out in back of the barracks and discuss the problem. My response was, "Assuming I can kick half of your butts, that means I get mine kicked 100 times." I tapped my rate insignia, and told them that was the governing authority, albeit in some what more colorful terms.
I made the smokers police up the grounds and empty trash cans and had the people that liked to put their feet on the walls of the buildings scrub the exterior walls. Punishment to fit the crimes.
