It wasn't as great as excepted. The medical care sucks. Good luck getting appointments. Tri-Care should be better. The respect I guess goes both ways I guess. It seems the general population is clueless on what we go through as soldiers. When on post/base it seems like the retiree ID card has a flag over it that makes me think no on cares who you were.

1SG Ronnie Snider, I care who you were; and I care A GREAT DEAL who you were....if that helps at all. I HIGHLY admire First Sergeants.
Tricare, in my opinion, is a good insurance company. I think it helps to have Medicare too; though.
The respect does indeed go both ways.
Well, the general population Could have no clue about what we go through as soldiers; as they have never Been Soldiers before. (Is how I feel) ....But I decidedly know what you mean.
I did not know that about Retiree ID cards. That May be a subjective matter. I am So sorry that you receive that lack of reception; 1SG Ronnie Snider.

Yes! Being a veteran opened many doors for me and anyone who knows me knows I served proudly.

It depends on the venue. Some places greeted me with open arms, a handshake and, in some incidents, a free drink. Others were not near as receptive.

I am very glad about the prior. (A free drink; no less??!!) And about the latter, SPC Shane Quigley, that could be for any number of reasons- none having anything to do with you. (People hating war; and Soldiers symbolizing that, etc.)

Oh, it was very much not personal. Like the Vietnam Protests, just aimed at one person instead of yelling to everyone.

This is indeed an interesting question. So people cant look at your chest and respect the rank, now you have to gain respect by your actions - just as you did in the military. The rank is just that. The rank doesn't imply respect for the individual.

Good answer, SGT Martin Lundberg.
I've viewed some Law Enforcement Officers' actions; that I felt were far less than befitting of their title.
I absolutely concur. Respect is earned.

Yes.
And Yes.
(Probably more than I've earned...)

I've been blessed to have been part of the 80's revival, and spared the danger of the 90's and today.

Thanks, SPC Margaret Higgins, but my brain looks at what my nephew did in Afghanistan, then at what I did in the 80's, and goes... "Meh..."

PO2 Steven Erickson, comparisons are "odious"; as the old saying goes. You're putting yourself down. Don't do it. And Jealousy is also very harmful to you; as well. It will eat you alive.
Be proud of YOU; and what YOU HAVE ACCOMPLISHED; without comparing yourself to anyone else in the military.

There are always a few people here and there who may be disrespectful, or may just be having a bad day, but overall I would have to say yes. It probably also helps that I am still very much surrounded by the military community, so that may change in a few years when we move to a more rural area with less military influence.

Actually Tsgt Spicer....i've found the further from a base you can get the more respect the do have for military and retired military. Hell in MI I get free haircuts in one place.....even tried to pay or tip and was told hell no anyone who serves or served will never pay for a cut here.....but there are probably only 3 military guys for a 50 mile radius so the financial impact is not that great....around bases military is take for "granted" (not meant to sound that bad) because there are just so many of us.
