Others tell me Im kind of smart... do I count????? LOL... I bought in Kempner,,,,its 10 min farther away then Killeen and worlds better in my opinion if you want more then poor housing choices or postage stamp look alike housing (or apt, if that is your thing)
If tight community, walking distance to shopping, apartment or other multi family living is for you.... Lots of nice stuff in Cove

I agree SGM Killeen is terrible. The further you are the better. You barely see Cove on the news and Kempner and even Lampassas. I love cove cause 1cav is on the same side of post as Cove, so I can go home to change.
I'm 11mins from my driveway to 1bde HQ without traffic lol

I will get an RV and park it at Belton lake. Straight shot to post in the back road.

Tell us locals what you're looking for in housing.
School age children?
EFMP?
I PCS'ed here in 2005, stayed here in 2014 when I retired....so i have some experience with the location and some slightly dated experience in cav land.. I retired as the 1CD G3 SGM

EDIT: Have you already decided you do not want on post housing? Or are you looking at off post as a temp deal till on post is available?
Do you have a unit sponsor? And do you want one?

SSG(P) (Join to see) SGM Erik Marquez As a soldier with a young child (you never stated you had a wife) is there a reason why you are not considering the possibility of on post housing considering they have many advantages over renting
Also you mentioned the idea of a home gym, Fort Hood has many excellent fitness facilities and activities including some within 1st CAV's area and spread across post.
I retired from Fort Hood in 2003 living in Bell County since 2000.

The wife wants to live off post and have more options as far as housing. We will most likely still look at on post housing as well, but from what I've experienced at Polk it's crowded and doesn't have the options I want, like a garage and a decent sized yard.

Much of the GOV housing at Hood has a garage, or carport, not all. Crowed? Well multi family, but I assume that is what your looking to rent? Or are you looking for a single family house

In today's market because of the downsizing, renting is the way to go. The two best areas in my opinion are Harker Heights and Copperas Cove. Although, if you don't mind a drive you can look to Belton and Nolanville. I suggest you shop around with real estate companies and look at their ratings before you go with one. I have been here for 11 years and have always lived in Copperas Cove. The schools are good but I suggest you live on the outskirts of town. That is where the best and newer neighborhoods are. House Creek North and Walker Place neighborhoods are two of the best. Hope this helps.

I lived in Killeen and it was the first time my car was ever broken into. I did like driving downtown checking out D street back in the 80's. ☺

What advice do you have for off-post housing for Fort Hood?

Use Linnemann Realty only! Don't use anyone else, you'll regret it. Check out Harker Heights or Nolanville. Belton is good, but is more of a drive. Cove is ok, just on the other side of Hood.

Sir I have no doubt your comments are based on your personal experience..true and honest, but perhaps limited to your personal experience .
Linnemann Realty may be a good resource, but I assure you it is not the only one here.
I have bought 4 houses and a business location since arriving in the area. having used and experienced several reality companies, and two rental managers
Shine Reality is a stand out company I can personally recommend as one that will treat all fairly. Work for the buyer and listen to your needs.

I also love Jean and her team at Shine Realty, but have not heard very good reviews for her boys and their rental business. Many rental agencies out there, just get with your PSG or 1SG when you report and they should be able to assist you better based on what your needs will be.

Or don't use a realtor and save the 3%. We had some bad experiences with several firms in the Hood area.

You should have been assigned a sponsor, if he or she is not lousy, they should be able to guide you through everything during ua pcs move.

Should, wold, could.. Sponsorship program has been broken for as long as I was in..1984-2014
It has a smattering of success when the stars align, or the Sm contacts the unit directly AND the gaining unit gives a rats ass. ,,,, not a given... More so as direct assignments on paper for a junior enlisted mean nothing .. Once you are picked up at replacement by Div g1.. you will go where Div G1 wants you.....your "assignment" and how may have been sponsoring you means nothing. Needs and bodies

I've lived there for just over 12 years. My advice: Stay away from Killeen. Harker Heights is great. Have heard great things about Copperas Cove areas as well.

I've lived in Copperas Cove for 8 years and have had no problems with crime. It's close to post, and has good schools within walking distance.

SSG(P) (Join to see) I think SFC (Join to see) is stretching the truth a bit about the traffic at the two western gates. I live less than a mile from the east gate, in Killeen. I never am more than 3 cars away from showing my ID and getting on base.

Yes, Killeen is more run down, but the housing is a LOT cheaper. I'm paying $405 for a one bedroom apartment. Of course, my kids are grown and gone, and I don't need more than what I have.

South Killeen has nicer homes, more space, and nicer stores. I tend to shop at the Commissary, but there are two Super WalMarts south of Hwy 190. Of course, the main gate, which is to the south, is absolutely the worst one to enter Ft Hood from.

Meanwhile there's Nolanville and Harker Heights to the east of Killeen, which also puts you closer to I-35 in case you want to visit the bigger cities. (Belton, Temple, Waco, Austin, Dallas, Ft Worth, San Antonio ...) Nolanville is a farming community, and might have bigger lots.

Also, south on Hwy 195 is Florence, another farming community.

My advice would be to use Apartment Finder or some other website, and pick someplace you can stay for 6 months while you check the area out.

Maybe SGM but I can say this, do not attempt to use clear creek or main gate after 0530. You will lose lol
