What advice would you give to someone going to Korea (first duty station) who has never been out of the country before?

Soju means sake, or rice wine. One of the very few alcoholic bebarges you'll find there.

I recommend staying away from Soju. As a EMT I helped out in the ER during my off duty hours and we had to pump several stomachs of those who drank too much of it. If it had been any longer for one of them he wouldn't have made it. If you let it sit for awhile it will separate with a clear liquid on top which was the stuff used in embalming. So, if you don't mind being pickled literally, drink it.

1. Learn about the history, culture and the language of the place you are going.
2. When there, get off base and see some sites and get to know the country and its people. (No, I do not mean going to bars and brothels.)
3. Dress warmly in the winter - you will be glad you did.
4. Best to travel off base in groups but try to find a buddy interested in more than bars and brothels.

You are going on a vacation. But be sure to keep your nose clean. Great tourist duty.

Take time before you go to learn the culture and society before you go. While there visit historical sites and important areas that mean something to the locals

Soju is fine it is the homemade stuff you need to worry about as they put formaldehyde in everything.

Don't come back with a medical file thicker than when you entered the country

Learn the culture of the country your living in. Rewmber, you’re not in America and things don’t operate the way they do in the states. And be mindful and respectful of the way they do things.

Remember that you are in their country and respect that. You are apt to see poverty that you might not even imagine could exist but don't look down on the people as if you are better than they are. Stay away from the prostitutes and drug dealers and learn another culture while you are there. Korea is a beautiful place if you keep open eyes and an open mind.
