What are invading armies expecting to accomplish?

What is expected from the residents when invaded by a foreign army? Usually armies invade for resources, security or fear of impending attack. In the Ukraine, If Russia Prevails they will have a hostile population to varying degrees as an army of occupation. What is their end game?

Putin's grand scheme to establish his legacy as restoring the old Soviet Unions borders and influence and, of course, to remain in power.

So it is an ego and legacy thing. He will be remembered but I am not sure it is in the light he would desire.
