I have known several enlisted people who were once officers, but resigned their commissions and then enlisted. When enlisted go officer they are called mustangs, but is there a term for people who take other path? (Not looking for derogatory names.)

A lot of times they change service branch and go from active to reserve. I know several former National Guard and Army officers who enlisted in the CGR. There are several reasons for doing it, but it is mostly done to qualify for a partial retirement. It can be done to change services with the goal to go through OCS when there is an opening. Most of the guys I have knwn that have done it, just got tired of being paper-pushers and wanted to do a real job. They jump right in and rise up the ranks. I know at least three E8's who were formerly officers and one E9.
