My questioned is targeted towards other 25W4O or 5Os, but I welcome any and all input from those across the force that have served or rated someone who has served in certain positions. I'm a 25W4O and I've held Network Control Chief and Platoon Sergeant positions and I'm currently holding a Detachment Sergeant position. What are some demanding/career progression positions you would recommend for a Senior NCO?

A recently retired CSM-turned-civilian-contractor that I instruct with told me that holding the position of Battalion S-3 NCOIC (a MSG position) as a SFC will be an attention grabber, along with being a Platoon Sergeant (FORSCOM or AIT/TRADOC), Drill Sergeant, EOA, AIT or NCOA Instructor, or Career Counselor.

SFC Watkins,

Thanks for the feedback. I have received a lot of the same from my battles, superiors, and mentors here as well.

SFC Gannon,

I routinely check my career map for any updates. Positions that I'm considering are IG and EOA because they are also in line with my civilian degree path. A follow on question to the one above is: Should I pursue additional staff positions for my specialty before going outside it again? I did very well out in Recruiting. Would do recruiting again, but only if I was getting ready to retire.

What's your NCO Professional Development Guide say about this?

I would agree with a few others who have posted in reference to IG, EOA, SHARP, etc.  These are all considered very challenging staff assignments outside the normal scope of your MOS and being successful in them, from what I have seen in my career, has definitely helped those NCOs be more competitive for promotion.  Most, if not all, of the SFCs I can recall in those jobs were selected for MSG.

MSG Millhauser,

Thank you for the feedback. I appreciate it. I'm currently working for a local nomination IG slot. I also think IG would give me a leg up in the future, with all the regulation diving that comes with the positions.
