What are some of the stereotypes that the Military (All Branches) receive/have?

I always encounter people who think that because I'm in uniform that I'm politically a far-right conservative.

Back in my day on domestic flights we were discouraged from wearing them on domestic flights. If we were PCSing to Germany if it was a charter flight from Charelston, SC to Rhein Mein we wore dress greens. But when I travel now I see so many soldiers in ACUs, ABUs etc. thank you for the answer!

SGT Edward Thomas We can't fly in ACUs anymore. It's either business dress or Class A. I've had my luggage lost twice over the last 6 months, so no more checking in for me (especially for a 24 hour trip). By traveling in Class A's, I at least have a uniform on and ready and I can travel light so no need to check in luggage.

I will share a few I've come across:
Navy is gay
Marines are proud and dumb
Air Force is not the real military
Army thinks they're the best at everything

I'll accept it's not gay if you pull out peanut butter. . .
That means he wasn't ready. . .

That Military Personnel that work in the office isn't as important as combat jobs

Great point. It can become much harder to concentrate on the front line if your DD93, SGLI, class 9 parts order, and food issues and requirements aren't squared away. Logistics and Adjutant General personnel are called Combat SERVICE support for a reason.

I would say that the infantry is not the smartest in the Army. I would contend that we are much smarter than many perceive us to be.

CPT (Join to see) Maybe more than you think...The Infantry is more intelligent than you perceive them to be (yes, I realize you're Infantry). I recently had an E-mail exchange with a radio station after hearing a lady brag about her boy getting a high (76-78 something like that. Her standards for high seem to be a little low.) score on the ASVAB and joining the Air Force. She went on to say that his friend scored a 38 and only qualified for the Army. As you can imagine, this got under my skin and I started to think about the guys I served with. Many of these guys were the types that never got good grades (why do homework when you already know the material and know you can ace the test?) or were almost constantly in trouble (sorry about the toilet, didn't realize the chemical reaction would be quite THAT violent). You know them, the guys that find ways of doing things that no one else thinks of, the ones that you can assign a mission and just KNOW they will find a way to get it done. I would much rather have the 76 ASVAB waiting for orders with detailed instructions on how to push a button back in the rear than out on the lines with me. Most of the guys in my unit could have picked any MOS they wanted, but they chose Infantry. For us, it's about the challenge, not the achievement.

SPC Brian Aranda I have a pretty high score. I got offered most everything in the military. I just didn't see anything else but infantry. I wanted to join the army to fight. And the infantry was were it was at. Look at the many infantry officers that were able to succeed in winning victories.

Mine was high enough that the recruiter told me I could literally choose any MOS I wanted. Went for Airborne Infantry and wouldn't change it for the world.

I recently had an encounter with one of my collegues where it came out that she was gay. She was up working with me on a project and I invited her out to dinner with my wife and she responded that her "spouse" traveled with her on the trip and she didn't want to impose. My initial instinct and response was, that's silly - my wife and I would love to take you and your husband to dinner.... After a funny and somewhat embarrassing conversation she admitted that she had withheld the information from me because of knowing that I was previously in the military - she thought that I would hold it against her or judge her differently! We had a great evening together - the four of us!
Stereotype - All military people hate gay people......furthest from the truth!

We all want war. And in today's environment how are we going to handle ISIS and Russia. And that we are all right wing conservatives.
Wait I am a Tea Bag carrying Conservative, so they got that right. Lol!

That females get pregnant to get out of deploying. I had finally gotten pregnant after years of trying and my pregnancy was shamed by males and other females because I "got out of deployment."

I sympathize with your situation, but this is one that I think is grounded in at least a grain of truth. YOU may not have gotten pregnant to get out of deploying, but I've seen Rear Detachments with literally platoons (yes, plural) constituted with nothing but pregnant women. You can tell me that they all just happened to get pregnant at just the right time to skip out on deploying, but I won't believe it.

Oh, yes! I completley agree with you, SGT. I have heard it straight from their mouths that they get pregnant to avoid deployment and that really grinds my gears. It just gives every single pregnant female that stigma that it is to get out of deployment, which for myself and a select few, is just not fair. Ya know?

When I was active duty and I would meet people in the community (mostly women). When they found out I was in the Air Force they would say "you don't look like you would be in the military"
I would be offended and say and what would that be like? Some would say "you know, Butch"

That all women in the Navy are "Boat Whores/Ho's".....I can't speak for others but I know I'm no Jezebel/Ho/Loose Woman/Harlot/etc so that general blanket sterotype shouldn't exit. But alas, it does.

I have to say you must have a great vernacular. I can't recall the last person to use the term harlot. It sounds classy for what it is referring too.

All I do on drill weekends is practice shooting and marching around and maybe driving trucks and tanks.
at least that is what my coworkers thought

If that were true the Army wouldn't even need recruiters, just point the way to the tanks....(and I was a Navy guy!)

I also get people that think my weekends are spent in the woods in a green tent "playing Army". Which I think is like capture the flag.
To be honest, I would love that

I currently live in the Alaska Interior where it is pretty rustic and going out is pretty limited. My 2 girlfriends picked me up last minute yesterday to grab a drink and catch up at a bar 2 blocks from my house. All we wanted to do was to have a catch up sesh and head home. A few moments later these guys walk in and are loud, disruptive, keep coming up to us offering us shots, asking our names, and purposely throwing themselves at our table trying to catch our attention, to the point where one soldier knocks my friend over and off her chair. He physically hurt her and was laughing about it, feeling like a hero that he caught our attention as his group was playing beer pong. So are these dudes complete idiots or do Army dudes like feeding into the stereotype of being rowdy, obnoxious, pushy and inconsiderate in a public space?

I would say that we are beasts of our environment. I was the typical infantrymen when I was young. Especially when we come out of the field. It is the worst time to go into town. For this I moved about an hour away from Fort Bragg.

Every service has "bros." They are the most dangerous of all males because they are incapable of understanding that which everyone else knows: that they are complete D-bags. +1 if they play lacrosse or "lax."
