What are some of the things a 2LT would do within a BCT?

1LT (Join to see) Which branch? Which unit in the BCT? Default: Lead a Platoon relevant to your basic branch. Organizational maintenance, PT, ranges/gunnery, run ranges, go to the field, recover from the field, plan/execute training, learn from your Platoon Sergeant and other NCOs, learn the human and materiel capabilities of your Platoon and Company, learn how to account for stuff, do every additional duty in your unit, go work a special project for your BN, learn how UCMJ works, lead soldiers.

That depends on the branch of the 2LT and the BCT. Infantry BCT and Infantry 2LT? You'd likely lead a platoon. Chemical 2LT? You'd be the Battalion Chemo. Artillery officer? Logistics officer? IBCT, ABCT, SBCT? All of those things factor into it.

That would depend on way too many things to give an accurate answer. They could find themselves in any number of S shops; this may also depend on what their branch is. They could also take up a position as a platoon leader, maybe even an executive officer based on the needs of the unit. The responsibilities that they would have in any of these positions would vary considerably.

SGT Joseph Gunderson Unless it is completely unavoidable, most Battalion Commanders will not want a Second Lieutenant to go to the staff. A first lieutenant with 18-24 min has at the company....fair game for a staff job.

This is true, sir. I was just stating possibilities. I've watched as new LTs were thrown into shops as we needed them filled; they often didn't stay long, but I also knew of a small handful that were 1LTs, nearly to CPT, before they went down to do PL time. Stuff happens as the army needs them to happen. We all know this.

SGT Joseph Gunderson - usually when this happens, it is a side effect of not giving up captains to go to the career course under the guise of taking care of people. It doesn't. The only exception is if you are giving them the opportunity of Command. This should be the exception.
