This memorial to Father Emil J. Kapaun is located outside the post chapel in Kapaun Barracks- Kaiserslautern, Germany. Father Kapaun (Captain) was serving with the 8th Cavalry Regiment during the Korean War when he was taken prisoner. He died while a POW insuring that his fellow POWs received physical comforts to his own deprivation. Of course he also provided the spiritual comfort needed under the harshest of conditions. In 2013 he was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions in Korea. A book about Chaplain Kapaun 'A Shepherd In Combat Boots' by William Maher has been published.

MAJ Judd Clemens Awesome monument. I've been there when I was assigned to Chieres, AFB right outside of SHAPE, Belgium from 1977 to 1980. Thanks for sharing Judd!

I find this hard question to answer, My wife and I do a lot of history vacations, and all the monuments have an impact, some more than others.

There are many fine monuments at Gettysburg and sometimes you get lucky enough to view one of the monuments when the elements and surroundings add to the creative work of the sculptor. I captured this image in October 2007. General Meade seated on his horse 'Old Baldy' at Cemetery Ridge.

Monument to a loved one. From 2010 in rural Ohio. A son, a brother, an uncle, perhaps a husband and father, a Marine, a hero. The image still tugs at the heart.

I am proud of my VFW #6051 in Colorado. We have a small town in a small county, and we have all styles of veterans. My Teller County is populated with 25% veterans. So out of the 20,000 in county population, 5,000 of us are veterans. I think veterans like living in the mountains, away from large groups of people. It does make for a huge Veterans Day BBQ though.

MAJ Norm Michaels - I'm glad for you that was not my experience. When one of the post officers says he does not want any more n-words in the post. Well that was it for me. I sent in a letter to the national and never received a response. Well just my problem. My neighbor wants me to join the one where I live now. Still debating it.

You can continue to dislike the VFW if you want. I am also a member of the American Legion. Give them a try. There is plenty to do out there that helps the community; these are just two that also offer military camaraderie while serving the community.
