I am thinking of putting up a survey to answer the question of the Best Military Movie. I am thinking these should be the most accurate and moving movies out of the pile of those made.
Movies I am thinking of movies that would be like "We Were Soldiers" and "Band of Brothers"

Somewhat ambivalent regarding this movie mainly because it does not necessarily focus on the Vietnam War directly but more on the Home Front and especially the Old Guard Regiment. 1st Battalion, 3rd Infantry Regiment which is the oldest continuously active Regiment in The United States Army. Having visited Arlington National Cemetery many times to visits graves of Uncles and Cousins who have fought in America's wars and most recently a former classmate who is KIA in Afghanistan I am left with some ambivalence regarding this movie. My mentor who was a Korean and a Vietnam War veteran resides in the columbarium now since he was a Professional Army Officer and Retired as a Lieutenant Colonel I Respect and Honor each of those men that I have known for their service. I guess my recollections about this movie are mixed as are my emotions about a conflict such as the Vietnam War in which we did not understand then in the 1960s and even today we did not understand let alone comprehend the complexities of that South East Asian Country. Nevertheless, I respect James Earl Jones who was an Army Officer and a Ranger in the 1950s as Sergeant Major Goody. James Caan does a good job as a grizzled Sergeant First Class Clell Hazard trying to teach a young, naive and eager soldier in D. B. Sweeney who becomes an Infantry Second Lieutenant who becomes a casualty and is interred in Arlington with Full Military Honors. The most touching scene is Mare Winningham flinching at the rapport of the 21 gun salute for her now deceased husband at the burial ceremony with her Mother and Father (An Army Signal Corps Colonel) by her side along with Angelica Huston who is Clell Hazard's Love Interest. I apologize for being long winded but I will agree with you since Francis Ford Coppola did a decent job of this movie. P.S. Dean Stockwell portrayed the Infantry Company Commander in this movie as well.
