What are the best neighborhoods to live in around Ft. Hood TX?

Hello all, I'm in the Army Reserves and my Unit is mobilizing to Ft. Hood TX for 12 months starting at the beginning of 2019. I have done a lot of research on the area and have spent about 6 months in the Ft. Hood area throughout my career, but always stayed on post. I know Killeen might not be the safest place to live but are there good neighborhoods within Killeen? Or is it better to stay in Copperas Cove and Harker Heights? I'm just looking to rent either an apartment or small condo and I would like the shortest commute possible. Any suggestions would be great.

Good Morning SFC (Join to see) ! I am currently a mobilized reservist at Fort Hood. I suggest knowing exactly where you are working, I spend the majority of my time at North Fort Hood, so the shortest commut would not be any of these areas. Closest to NFH is Gatesvlle but I prefer 25 min drive from Temple. Feel free to send me a message and I can discuss anything further. Take care

I will be PCSing to Fort Hood around the middle of February, and I am going to HHSC, 15 MI BN. I have been told that the unit is on West Fort Hood or Robert Grey Airfield (I don't know if those are the same thing). I will be working at the BN motor pool (I was told the BN motor pool is on Mohawk Road). I do not want to live on post. Where are some nice areas to live that do not have TOO far of a commute ( I'm looking for a 15-20 minute drive...

I live in killeen been here for 5years its not that bad. guess it depends on the street you live in..

I had lots of problems in Killeen. One of the rental companies I used wouldn’t do repairs because the homeowners wouldn’t agree to fix stuff. Another house I lived in there was a shooting/murder in the pastures on the road going out to BLORA. Another place I lived, I watched a raid happen. Police all geared up with shotguns and rifles.

I lived in Cove for a year while at FT Hood. Like others have said, it really depends on where you will be working on Ft Hood. I worked on West FT Hood and Cove was, by far, the closest. Gatesville is the closest for North Ft Hood. There is some decent areas in Killeen, but traffic is pretty much always horrendous. Check out this link, https://www.trulia.com/real_estate/Killeen-Texas/crime/. It gives the crime statistics so you can see the better and not so better areas for yourself.
