I loved my Matterhorns. Never, ever had any complaints with them.

Sorry to hear you are 'stuck' at Drum. I've only had (still do) my CW issue boots. Crappy socks will make any footwear feel much less comfortable. I spent money on good, thicker moisture wick socks for these. There is also spray to temporarily make the boots water resistant.
I can't speak on aftermarket boots b/c I didn't make much during my time.

This would be good advise from a man who made his living at Drum.

Tora Bora. Crampon compatible, warm. If the fashion police are on block leave, Asolo fugitives are a solid pair. Now, before the "everyone gets a trophy" crowd join forces with the AR670-1 masochists, I realize not all units willl use them or allow them. Having spent some long hours in some very bitterly cold environments, I think common sense and preventing cold weather injury is worth more than draconian uniformity.

depends are your needs, goretex, water resilency, comfort, moisture wicking, I live just a stones throw from drum, winters are very bad, sm's should be issued the items they need to perform their job, warm/dry boots, gloves and head gear they shouldn't have to buy it, when I went thru artic warfare leaders school we had everything issued top to down, this shouldn't be an issue for sm's regionally stationed, just because your issued items doesn't mean they are usable in extreme weather, exceptions need to be made and the average joe shouldn't be paying for them

CPT(P) (Join to see) Sir If I may... while you can afford "the best cold weather boots" can all of your Soldiers? Are you going to be asking of them something you're not willing or able to do ?? If they have to stand ASP guard for 4 hours in issue boots and you chastise them for complaining of the cold, or sitting down, starting a fire... all while your wearing gear and equipment they don't have,,, how might that be viewed by your soldiers?

When your standing there in your go fast super duper cold weather boots, and your soldiers are standing there with frozen feet feeling miserable... it won't matter to them if your feet are just as cold...all they will think about is you and your boots..while they are stuck in issue gear your "Just too special" to use

CPT(P) (Join to see) - I was enlisted for four years before I commissioned. I know what it's like to scrape by and have to sell my personal belongings and vehicle to make ends meet. I'm sorry if a simple question sparked some inner spite of officers.

Sir I suggested you consider how the situation your looking to make, might be viewed by others... , not just officers. That you are one is not germane in this conversation... you could be a SFC or a LTC, CPL or SGM...the issue is the same.
Officers are not leaders .. Nor are Non commissioned officers.. though leaders may be of ether group.

I mentioned real observations likley, insight into how your situation might be perceived and ask you to consider them... I did not say you did anything wrong..
Try and actually consider what i said...... or not,, that would be telling as well.

SGM Erik Marquez, I can see where both you and CPT(P) (Join to see) are coming from on both ends. When I first read this question, I thought it was a great question, and it still is. As my fellow Screaming Eagle LTC Kevin B. mentioned, the 101st took care of us. But I know from my own experience that not every unit is like that. Sometimes, you know SGM, you have to be resourceful and be able to oversee the issue prior to it being an issue. And I know you SGM, you always have made sure here on RallyPoint that those in leadership positions remember to take care of their troops first. Yet, I can see how this LT saw your comments as sort of an attack on him and his question. I for one do not know this LT but I'm glad he asked the question. I'm sure other troops at Drum have all thought the same thing. So maybe by the LT asking this question, a junior soldier will see the recommendations and be able to not freeze his feet off at Drum.

SGT Ben Keen - The intent was absolutely not give a little more to say it was a bad question it was simply to consider how it might appear to others before making a decision

If the young lieutenant has done that and sees no issue with wearing gear his soldiers don't have access to or can't afford or perhaps they Artie have a great winter boot and he just wants to catch up to them only he knows that for sure I simply mentioned something to be considered prior to the decision

SGM Erik Marquez - I fully agree with. Like I said, I could see where both of you were coming from.

The good stuff I used in Antarctica are non starters for Drum as they probably don't go for moon boots, mukluks, etc. I will say there is an issue with boots that don't look military enough. The ones I went with mostly because I have a wider foot were Danners. However I don't know if they'd be on the kosher list. Important features to look for are Gore Tex and room for a felt sole liner. Great idea from another MIL to also focus on the tootsie sleeves.
