In my own combat experience, the best traits in a leader are facing up to three fears: 1) first and foremost, a concern for the safety and well being of those you lead, 2) secondly, a concern for your own self preservation so that you can be there wholly for your the men that look to you to lead them through a successful mission, and 3) lastly a commitment to the mission that both your men and you have been entrusted with. The best traits in an authentic leader are:
Leading by example. Show them the way and let them follow.
Transparency in all communications. Keep it honest and real.
Provide goals, but let them provide the means and methods. There is usually more than one way to get the job done.
Encouraging creativity and independence in problem solving. Great ideas can come from anyone and everyone.
Acknowledge successes and failures. Feedback provides the growth that is needed.

Love this! I always felt that commanders that i had that had been prior enlisted were the better leaders. They knew what we as noncommissioned officers went through and related better to their subordinates

Authentic leadership is a style of leading that emphasizes being genuine and honest. The best traits in an authentic leader are integrity, humility, and trustworthiness.

Integrity is essential for authentic leaders because it allows them to be consistent in their words and actions. A leader with integrity will always remain true to their values and beliefs, no matter the situation. They will also take responsibility for their mistakes and strive to do the right thing.

Humility is another important trait of an authentic leader. This means they recognize that they don't know everything, and they are open to learning from others. Humility also allows them to admit when they make mistakes without feeling embarrassed or ashamed.

Finally, trustworthiness is key for any leader who wants to be seen as authentic. People must feel like they can trust the leader's words and actions before they can truly believe in them.

I experienced through life that leadership is a learned talent. The leader must always be honest and fair when dealing with subordinates and superiors alike. Being a leader does not mean being everyone's friend. However, it does mean that you must be recognized as being concerned for each of your subordinates health, welfare and future.

A leader leads by example. How you do your job shows your crew what is expected from them too.

Encourage innovative thinking from your subordinates and always keep an open mind to their ideas.

Give positive feedback publicly and privately. Reprimand individuals privately but don't hesitate to give general reprimands to the group when they don't follow the rules or meet expectations.

Don't hold grudges. Once a reprimand is given - the incident is history and needs to be forgotten. (That is unless the same incident is repeated again by the same person).

If you keep your door open to your people they will provide you with their ideas, concerns and yes, their gripes too.

Finally, don't give answers if the question requires further investigation and/or advice from your superiors or other experts. Tell the person with the question that you will get back to them in a timely manner. THEN MAKE SURE YOU DO IT!!!
