What are the odds of a SSG being able to go airborne?

My re-enlistment window is opening up at the end of the year. As of now, I’m on assignment to Ft. Bliss and I’d like to re-enlist for airborne. I’m a 13J, 5 years TIS is that matters.

If you want Airborne and don't mind reclassing - drop your Civil Affairs or SF packet, get Selected - boom guaranteed Airborne.

I report there before I re-enlist. Would I have to extend to meet the time on station requirements?

SFC (Join to see) no, you have to reenlist before you report
You must reenlist or sign a declination within 30 days of coming on assignment. Your reassignment section will not give you your orders until after you have re-enlisted

My window doesn’t open until late December early January, retention hasn’t pulled me in. I report in September. Do I need to go to retention myself?

SFC (Join to see) when you are eligible to reenlist is irrelevant. Once you are placed on assignment you must extend or reenlist to meet the SRR for your assignment. For a CONUS assignment, it’s two years from your report date.
You must meet your SRR prior to receiving your orders, or else sign your declination. If you refuse to sign your declination, your 1SG or CDR will sign stating that you refuse to reenlist

From what I’ve seen, you’d have no problem. I am new to the Army and just finished airborne myself but we had many SSG here as well as officers. You may just need to talk to the right personnel. The some of best leaders here were the enlisted SSG going through the school with us.

I’ll see what I can find out for you here, since I’m stuck here for the moment as a holdover. Sorry for the typo in that first message.

how is your pt test numbers look like if there up there around 300 then you should make it as long as you can run like the wind because they will make you and fall out of 3 runs and booted good luck and when i went to airborne school we had a LTC go through and made he had to be in his 40's late 40's

It shouldn't be an issue, just know there are only three duty stations for airborne FA: Bragg, Alaska, and Grafenwoehr, Germany.

MOS and rank are not the problem. Are you wanting to serve in a Airborne unit or are you wanting the school not the duties? You can speak with your branch to see if they can place you in on an Airborne assignment. And get BASIC Airborne Course in route to new unit.

That’s too easy. When I went through there were O-4s & E-8s going through with me. It’s not a difficult school to pass by any means if you’re remotely in shape.

Talk to retention also plenty of non airborne units have airborne slots if you talk to your BN/BDE S3. If you get the physical knocked out and a slot opens up they will probably send you, this happened to several guys I was in Drum with who wanted airborne
