What are the pros and cons to down-voting a comment without attempting to support your position with a comment of your own?

Ah the infamous "down vote without comment." It's only one man's opinion, but that is behavior I expect from imgur or reddit, not a discussion thread for military members who, I believe, should have the strength of their convictions. If we disagree with someone's post we should have the courage to state why. Not doing so is lazy at best, and cowardly at worst. It also defeats the purpose of a discussion thread. What say you?

I'd like to talk about one of the discussion mechanics on this site. Specifically, I think the idea that you can down-vote a comment without explaining why you disagree with the presented argument encourages groupthink. It lets you boo from the crowd, but it doesn't force you to offer a better argument or explain the flaws in the argument you're booing. I submit that down-voting without an actual coherent response to a statement is intellectual cowardice. Thoughts?
