As shooting incidents seem to become more frequent what have you prepared yourself and your family to do should you ever be involved with an 'active shooter' in a public place? I have a friend (single mom veteran) who will be transferring to an online college program rather than risk dealing with a loner-loser who might 'go off' in a classroom? Suggestions on how best to prepare? Google 'bulletproof blankets' which are available for students.

Get low, get your bearings, and head the opposite way. That is what I told my daughter. If I am in it, most likely be responding. I'll figure it out based on the AO I am at.

I move towards the sound of trouble. I go to where i'm needed and will render any and all aid i am capable of. My oath didn't because my contract did.

Return fIre, if threat is clear of innocents. Reduce threat to others as quickly as possible.

These are the steps I would follow.
The Military teaches to get off the X. So the first thing I would do is grab my family member/s depending on who I'm with, and move them with me to cover. If Cover is not available, Move them to concealment. Then proceed to egress out of the area to a "safe area". While doing this keep gun holstered, but my hand near it.
If I were to draw my gun, I may be mistaken as the shooter and get shot when police arrive on scene. If I'm in the area directly affected by the gunman. The First steps remain the same, move myself and my family behind cover. Get them to move using the cover to get to a safe area, and engage the shooter. The moment I engange I know my life expectancy goes down as I have just made myself a target so I want my family to be out of the way when I do this. When I kill him, because if you're shooting at me I will end you. Make sure the scene is ok and their are no more shooters. Clear the weapon, set it on the ground and place my hands above my head and wait for the police.

The Last thing you want is to have the gun in your hands when the police are responding to a active shooter. In that scenario you may get one warning to drop the weapon before they end you.

I put other because of the statistical improbability of a mass shooting event. Ultimately, in most cases whee you would need a firearm, simply showing that you have one is sufficient. An overwhelming majority of self defense firearms never need to be fired to diffuse a hostile situation. If an assailant already has a gun out and is actively engaged in targeting and killing people in a public space, your best bet is to take cover and go on the defensive. For us . . . let that training kick in, but don't immediately attempt to engage the assailant without ensuring your own safety.

I am prepared to do anything and everything – I will not be a victim who is easily killed. I am a retired state trooper and have served in the Army/Army Reserve for 37 years. I am a strong advocate of concealed carry and eliminating “Gun Free Zones”, which makes it easy for killers to kill without fear of being stopped before they can execute their defenseless victims. It should be painfully obvious why shooters usually choose schools – they don’t have to worry about anyone being armed. Campus police can’t be in every classroom and even worse, elementary, middle and high schools usually only have one officer present (if any). This is why I also advocate allowing school staff to be permitted to carry concealed on school grounds. Both my wife and I always carry concealed – even in places posted “No Guns.” If you’ve concealed your weapon properly they will never know. I strongly recommend to all of you: Get trained, learn the law, be mentally prepared, get a good weapon and carry concealed. At least give yourself a chance if God forbid you are ever placed in such a horrible position.

Don’t be fooled people, this is NOT and gun control issue and WILL NOT be stopped by creating more restrictive gun laws.

Notify 911, assist others in escaping the area, and go hand-to-hand with the shooter if need be.

If such an event occurs...it will be a good day to fight; it will be a good day to die. Getting shot in the chest hurts just as much as getting shot in the back; and it is far better to go out in a single blaze of glory than to slowly fade away.

...or to survive and always wonder if there wasn't more I could have done. From reports it appears that Mintz first took three shots, then Mercer shot him again in the arms and legs while he was down, breaking both his legs. Depraved evil personified.

CPO Andy Carrillo, MS Now that POTUS is going to politicize the private ownership of guns, the problem will be solved.

Of course POTUS could work on early ID, mandatory treatment and/or confinement for these unbalanced people. Guns are not the problem!

When POTUS fixes the murder rate in his home town of Chicago (or DC, Baltimore, Detroit, Oakland, etc.) then I might be inclined to listen to what he has to say on the matter...

I don't hear MADD calling for all cars to be impounded because 32,000+ people died in traffic accidents last year, do they? Nope, they go after the criminal driver and impounding their vehicle is a consequence of their poor decisions...
