The worst duty station in CONUS has to be Fort Irwin 21 days a month in the box as OPFOR. Also 55 miles one way thru the desert to nearest town Barstow. I hated it there. My unit was full of a bunch great soldiers made good friends but the duty sucked.

I was at 29 Syumps, not too far from you (considering everything is far from the Stumps- distance is relative). I loved it! You are a long ways from everything, but some great liberty in every direction!

I got to be the only private that loved Hood. Spent about my first couple years in the army there with 3/1 before they relocated to Knox...first day out PSG tells us “if you can’t get laid here you need to get the fuck outta the army”.....worst was by far Knox....watching a bunch of senior NCOs who were coming off tradoc trying to take hold of a battalion fresh out of the Kunar was awful. Those guys wanted medals so bad and at the time Hardin (the county surrounding post) was dry so if you wanted to party you stayed on post or drove up to Louisville. Hands down the reason I got out of the army

I was in the Marine Corps and the absolute worst place we have is Twenty Nine Palms in the California desert. It is the closest thing to being in Iraq. During the summer it gets up around 120 degrees. I've actually seen the blacktop on the roads melting. On top of that there is nothing to do. The nearest city to go out to eat or do anything is Palm Springs, California and it is an hour and a half away. We also have " Range 400" there which is a "live fire" training range. It's pretty damn intense.

I loved the Stumps! But if all you saw was base and Palm Springs, no wonder you hated it. I used to run around with a rich kid, and I asked him once why everyone in Palm Springs either ignored us, looked down on us, or was hostile towards us. He said "They are money, we are trouble; and they don't like trouble." Palm Springs was one of the few places I avoided. But everything else, from the Monument to Phoenix to Elsinore to Big Bear we made our playground!

Ft. Sill. From what I saw of the post itself, it was ok; however, nothing but horror stories about Lawton. Regular "shakedown" moments from local authorities.

NTC wasn't great, but I was only there on a lengthy training rotation. This kind of skews my perspective.
