My worst had to be Ft. Irwin, although both my family and I enjoyed our time there. The main negatives were being so far from the nearest town and being so far away from family. Last I heard, it had been turned into a two year hardship tour.

Not sure about five, but here’s my top three, FT. Sill, FT. Riley, and Schweinfurt , Germany

My father always told me “the two best units in the Army (Military) is the one you came from and the one your going to.” This would imply you’re in the worst. It would be the same for Duty Stations.
What really makes it the best or the worst, is you.

I got lucky, I contacted my branch manager in advance requesting the units I wanted to go to and had no problems so all my assignments were good.

The Army has a lot of posts in cultural wastelands.
If you love strip malls and your idea of fine dining is Applebee's, they are great.
Ft. Bliss, Ft. Bragg, Ft. Sam Houston, Ft. Carson, Ft. Lewis, Ft. Jackson, Ft. Dix, and the various Virginia and Maryland forts would be tolerable among the major posts in CONUS. The rest, wastelands. Hawaii would be great.
A lot of the fun of the Army went away when most of USAREUR was sent home. Would still be great to be in Germany or Italy, but less opportunity.

Not being a "goat roper", for me, Ft Hood was probably the worst. On the other hand, Germany was the best. Served 4 tours and enjoyed most of it - trips to Graf being the exception

All my assignments were as good as I made them. Your personal attitude set you up for success or failure and when I enlist in 77 no one was promising me any lavish resorts. I could find pros and cons at every duty assignment. FT Lewis was a perfect example of a great base to be stationed at but the Law Enforcement Command had so many chiefs that they couldn't run the organization properly. Thankfully my direct line supervisor took great care of our team and we were able to avoid the drama. But man was that a pretty place to be stationed. I hope everyone can find that happy place durning their tours of service.

The one I hated most was Ft. Stewart. As the Team Leader of a team of mechanics, and when we weren't in the field, I averaged getting home at about 10:00PM. Nobody's fault, it went with the territory. Still sucked.
