I feel it's the unit you are with sometimes you just get poor leadership.

When I graduated from OCS in 1968, typical assignments ran 3 months further schooling, 6-9 months stateside, then 1 Year in Vietnam. Of the 66 graduates, I’d say 75% put in for San Francisco as their first duty station as 2nd Lieutenants. I was the only one to get it....Oakland Army Base. Scheduled to report January,1969, the movie Bullitt with Steve McQueen opened in December 1968. Filmed in San Francisco. I saw that and couldn’t wait to get there. I had 11 travel days and drove it in 5. For someone never west of Kentucky, the entire trip was an eyeopener. I regret to this day not stopping at the Grand Canyon. Oakland was a mind blowing assignment. I was XO of the Transient Company. We shipped troops to Vietnam. They arrived and were placed on a flight manifest within 12 hours to 3 days. We housed, fed, and shipped them. I administered about 20-30 Article 15’s a day for AWOL’s. Lawyers with injunctions chased me daily as the lawsuits started with Richard Nixon all the way down the chain of command to this lowly 2nd Lieutenant. It was necessary for an officer to accompany refusals to Travis Air Force Base to witness that they got on the plane. This happened about every other week. My responsibility. I managed to learn the MAC system at Travis and hitched a ride to Hawaii for a 3 day pass. Fort Derussy had The best beach on Oahu. BOQ consisted of a shared Quonset hut for $1.50 a night. 6 months later I reported to the 1st Infantry Division in Vietnam. Karma. So Oakland was the best, followed by Vietnam the worst.

I got lucky. 353 Psyops at the Presidio circa 1972 did summer camp there. I was sent to Zion National Park with a 5 man Psyops team .

Carson is not all that it’s hyped up to be. Some people spend their whole careers trying to go there, but most people you talk to at Carson really dislike being there including me

I think it's more the unit then the location that makes the duty station good or bad, because if you're not happy with your unit than you're not going to happy where you're at, but it's also what you make of your situation as well. I was stationed at Fort Bragg, NC twice; Fort Wainwright, AK; Fort Campbell, KY; Camp Humphreys, S. Korea; Camp Carol, S. Korea; LSA Anaconda, Balad Iraq; Fort Bliss, TX and out of all of them there wasn't a bad duty station maybe a place I wouldn't want to go back to but it wasn't the worst place in the world ( well maybe Iraq ).

When I was stationed at Fort Stewart, I was sent to Hunter Army Airfield which was one of my favorite places.

SFC Gregory Moe - Good for you, the medical company wasn't a nice place to be assigned to angry leadership.
