Yes everything is what you make it, but it all depends on what fits your personality, what your childhood was like, your expectations and many other life factors. Take me for example I grew up in a rule area on a lake and lots of woods, near a ton of family. And one gas station. I hate the city, the rude people in it. Idiots who cant drive and so on. With that being said Fort Belvoir is the worst place Ive ever been. DC and 100 miles around it are a nightmare. The fishing is ok just don't eat the fish lol. Fort Campbell and Hawaii-Wheeler army air base (i avoided downtown the whole time) so far have been my favorite. So you have alot to consider if a station of choice is in your future.

Only an inferior attitude and inability to cope or perform will make for a bad duty station.

The mentality of enjoying where you're at is very valid, never wallow. However some installations have much better policies and procedures than others. Fort Hood is one of the worst in the Army, not because of op tempo or climate or discipline, but because it is so large that FT Hood makes its own rules; typically to the detriment of the soldier. This is not a dig at units, but the ancillary services. Ft Hood has different policies for just about everything than the rest of the Army.
