All military duty posts are great, it is what you make of it, except a War Zone Area.

I always found that Duty Stations broke down into Thirds. Even Hawaii. One Third Loved it. One Third Hated it. And One Third could care less. With ONE Exception: ALASKA. Never met anyone who served there that wasn't scheming to get back somehow.

IRAQ Sucked, and Fort Riley would be the other one although it was just because it was my first and I was a private.

I was told by an old CPO that there were only two good duty stations. The one you just left and your next one. All the rest are miserable. He was very right.

While not actually being IN the Army, I have been TDY to several Army bases. The worst and best I've been to, were both on the same island...........Panama. Both could be considered the worst because you're right smack dab in the middle of a tropical rain forest with 100% humidity and it rains every single day. The 2 Army bases there are Ft. Sherman and Ft. Davis. The day time temperature is about 90°+ all year long and it drops maybe 10° or so at night. We could wash and dry our clothes/uniforms, hang them up and an hour or 2 later, they'd be damp again. Bug city too. I got bit by a Brown Recluse while I was there.
It was the worst because of everything listed above but, it was also the best because the water is crystal clear thanks to all the coral acting as a filter and if you're a certified diver (which many of us were including myself), they have a dive shop right there on the base with everything you could possibly need and we were able to explore some beautiful areas. I got to pet a Moray Eel, saw a Puffer fish up close and also saw an Angel Fish that was about 2 feet in diameter.
Ft Sherman is an Army Air Field but, their air strip was basically just a large gravel road. Their NCO club was basically just a bar.........nothing else. They had an actual mess hall but the entire time we were there, we were fed field kitchen rations. Breakfast consisted of powdered milk, powdered eggs, sand paper biscuits, bacon that you could have hammered nails with and instant coffee. We had MRE's for lunch and dinner was pressed turkey roll or pressed pork roll and various off color vegetables.
Ft. Davis on the other hand, which we did get to visit a couple of times, was much larger, had a paved air strip and the NCO club was just wild. They had live bands every weekend, slot machines (not rigged like in Vegas) and a huge dance floor.
