What arrangements did you have for your kids who are with the other parent in another state?

After I got divorced I received orders to Bragg, so my kids stayed with their mom in Florida. I drove down twice a year every block leave and they stayed with me for two weeks at a time. When I got orders to Japan we agreed it was a once in a lifetime opportunity for them and so the kids came to live with me. After that I picked a spot close to her parents and she moved to the same state.

Thanks SFC! Very insightful. Do you feel that I would have more opportunities than twice a year to make visits to them? Thanks again!

SSG Jacob Pederson if you live closer, absolutely. My ex wife's car sucked so I had to drive 12 hours down and 12 hours back. But if you're 4 hours or less away it could be every 4 day.

Thanks for the response MAJ. I don't feel i need a lawyer, their mother and i get along just fine and will do what we have to do to make it work. (Besides her moving to where im at, because she is active duty.) I just wanted arrangement ideas without any legal implications. Just co-parenting from afar.

Very happy for all of you SSG Jacob Pederson. Nevertheless, if there is something I learned on 27 years of service and 2 company commands, custody matters require legal advice. Just talk with a lawyer even if just for shits and giggles. Remember that you will move out of state and since she’s a NG, even as an active duty, shell be stuck inthe same state for the most part. Just my humble opinion.

It will depend on who has more custody. The Army doesn’t recognize joint unless you have the higher percentage example 60 you 40 her. If she has more than you, you will have to live in the Barracks so it will be hard to ever have your kids. Meaning you will not qualify for bah with dependents

Thank you for your response MSG. As an E6 I would be required to live in the barracks? I honestly did not know that.

Most duty location (CONUS) allow SSGs to reside off post and are authorized to receive BAH at the without dependent rate. This allows space for the E5 and below to reside in the barracks. SSG Jacob Pederson
