What awards transfer over from my service in the National Guard? Is there a way to get that processed?

My SNCO told me I should look into what awards I rate, how would I go about that? I don’t have access to AKO anymore so I was wondering how to get those award records and who exactly to send them to.

I would tend to think that every award earned by an NG that is covered DoD and AR regulations should transfer, however, any state specific awards should stay in the state.

Active duty awards transfer, but typically NG awards awarded only by a given state do not. An example a New York National Guard Achievement Award would not transfer over, but if the soldier while in the Guard, earned a Army Achievement Award it would.

Do a SF 180 or you can request your records online. The form will tell you where to send it to!

All military awards including state awards are documented weather their worn or awarded promotion points is another issue. I will tell you state awards have tipped the scales on quite a few people on board's I have been on

Take your DD214s and the orders (the completed 638) for your federally recognized awards (i.e. Those listed in AR600-8-22 Military Awards. If you have an award in that regulation, then you may wear it on active duty.
So very confused looking at your profile. Rank chart and photo are USMC, units listed are ARNG. So are you a Marine that transferred to the ARNG? If you are going to the Marines from the ARNG, they come at the awards world differently. You will need the Marine Corps regulation/instruction. The awards for the Marines generally transfer to the Army.
How many decorations and which ones are we talking about?

Sgt (Join to see) - would recommend you get a three binder and put copies of all the important papers the military gave/gives you in there. DD214s, current ERB/equivalent, Orders, certificates, awards, evaluations, hand receipts, security clearance documents etc go in the binder. It will help later on when you are old and broke and need documentation.
So the ARNG never issued you an award? (Pinned it on you and gave you the purdy green vinyl award folder with an Army seal on it?) Are you looking to see if you have a campaign Medal? Good conduct Medal? ARCAM? You would at least have an ASR if you were MOSQ. did you deploy? Did you respond to a natural disaster?
For the Good Conduct Medal look at para 4-2, you were ineligible unless you were AGR.
If you think you missed an award in prior service, you may want to review this link. https://www.archives.gov/veterans/military-service-records/correct-service-records.html

SSgt GG-15 RET Jim Lint - the Guard can not issue a DD214, Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty. The have NG forms that vary. He would only get a 214 for terms of active duty service, typically IET, mobilizations for deployment under title 10, and other active federal service. Mobilization for disasters would be under title 32 typically. Not sure if EMAC activations out of state would be covered.

LTC Jason Mackay - Interesting, we can always learn more...and I do often on RP. I thought he mentioned 9 months in Isarel...which I assumed might be Fed...but I am not sure. I had the transfer from USMC to Army and had two USMC DD214s, then Army. USMC issued a 214 after each tour, then the Army issued me only one DD214 for 14 years! If you collect 214s, I got two for 7 years in USMC. :)

SSgt GG-15 RET Jim Lint - his experience in Israel was in a Private Military Company, Triple Canopy. I only have one 214, but I was Active Duty the whole time with no break in service. Everybody's journey is different.

Every award you have will transfer over. I was Army Guard, then active Navy, then back to the Guard. I have all of my Navy awards.

I didn't make my statement clear enough...I had no awards when I went from Army to Navy. But regardless, you are correct in assuming that state awards do not transfer.

SSG (Join to see) - the State Awards are the real hang up. Army Qualification badges from the group that encompasses marksmanship badges may not transfer.

You take your records from the NG and go to the current personnel center and ask them to transfer the appropriate awards to your new records.

Have you done this personally or have had a soldier do it? It seems as if it varies between every soldier/Civ.

SGT (Join to see) any award recognized by DOD, is transferable from 1 service to another. Or its equivalents, finding someone smart enough to do it might be a problem

If you are asking "What awards transfer over from my service in the National Guard to the Active Duty ... State awards do not transfer to the Federal side. E.g, a California Commendation Medal, California Achievement Medal, etc go into a drawer or you "I Love Me Wall" if you go Title 10.
