I'm currently up for re-enlistment, and am extremely interested in utilizing my Option 5 for Ft. Gordon. As a 35F, I hope I'm more likely to get assigned to one of the MI BDEs there, versus one of the TRADOC BN S-2's. I've attempted to research the Units there, however, resources are scarce. What are some experiences you have had at Fort Gordon? What are the average unit policies? Also, I have my family and was looking to buy a house in the area, as I would expect the influx of Cyber Command, in the near future, to be beneficial to the market as time progresses. What are some good neighborhoods, etc?

When I was stationed at Gordon, there was an officer qualified to give the German Armed Forces Proficiency Badge, and every unit gets a number of slots to go for it every few months. Unsure if that's still an opportunity, as that was back in 2012-2015. He might have left without suitable replacement. Look into it. Also, Ft Gordon is in a very pretty part of Georgia, and the on-post golf course is fantastic.

That's pretty awesome, I'd take a shot at the GAF-B any day, SGT. I appreciate the information.

Lived in the CSRA (what the locals call the central savannah river area) for 4 years. I lived in SC in Aiken county. I loved the area. You would be better to live just across the River in South Carolina in Aiken which would make about a 20 minute commute. You could either drive down route 1 or interstate 20 to the outer belt (520) and be on post pretty quickly. Cost of living was cheap. Tons of housing developments and new neighborhoods in the area. I always thought the schools were better in South Carolina than Georgia besides Columbia county where Evans Martinez and other nicer neighborhoods are are way too overcrowded IMO.

I’d go back in a heartbeat but all my mobs are to non tradoc bases.

Fort Gordon isn’t bad. If you’re assigned to the 116th Mi bde you will actually do Mi stuff and the unit is fairly laidback

What can I expect to experience at Fort Gordon, if I re-enlist there as a 35F?

I would suggest asking your reenlistment NCO or branch manager what positions will be open for your MOS at Ft. Gordon during your reenlistment window. As far as there area itself, I was stationed at Gordon from 09-12 and have recently been back for 3 diff schools this yr. The Army is putting a ton of work in to the base, and GA is putting money into the Augusta area. I would definitely suggest living in Columbia County, and do a ton of research on schools if you have children. From my personal experience, the GA school system is subpar. Being MI, you may want to look into the DC area (Ft Meade WHCA or Belvior) just to expand your options a bit.

Thanks for this, SFC. My wife is from the Meade area, but it’s really expensive for us at this point in our career. Also, we prefer the warmer climate and the more rural options.

Concerning duty assignments, you can only enlist for a duty station and you’ll be needs of the army at the specific duty station. Re-enlistment will only get you to that duty station. Not a specific assignment or unit.

Hello SSG,
I'm tracking the that I can only be guaranteed the duty station and not the unit. I was just hoping that the MI BDEs utilized 35Fs there (I can't imagine they don't) enough that I had a good career enhancing path. I know some MI BDEs have entire BNs dedicated to certain Intel Collections, in which case, I don't know my chances of assignment to those. I guess I'm trying to get an idea on whether or not I have a long shot to getting assignment to Gordon, and if so, a general idea on the post policies and what to expect as far as quality of life and work.

You have a better chance of going to an S2 since the majority of Gordon’s missions are November missions. Baseline, you’ll go where you’re needed but that won’t be known until you come down on orders and populate on a division’s gains roster SPC (Join to see)
