What can you do or say at Basic to ensure additional smoke sessions?

Call me crazy, but when I mustered in back in 1972 I had recently quit smoking (finally!)! It was a difficult enough transition that no incentive to resume smoking could have appealed to me. Still, I witnessed numerous formerly non-smokers take up the habit because of the deleterious "smoke break" incentive. How about this innovation? Start having "breaks." Eliminate "smoking" as the reason. I still remember breaking that nasty habit as one of the hardest things I've ever done. Let's not use military training as an inducement in any way at all.

Smoking for physical exercise is a bit like fucking for chastity. Neither belongs there.

Simply say anything other than yes Drill Seargent. You will be wrong. Smoke will follow.

Well, while on B-40 at Ft. McClellan, I told my Drill Sergeant that he could pay for my uniform cleaning when he ordered us into full MOPP while I was walking to the latrine. Trust me - that earned HELLFIRE, not just smoke. :-)

I’ll never forget reception at Fort Benning we received a briefing from this CPT and she informed us that she wanted us to anonymously write her letters informing her of how the reception Drill Sergeants were. Long story short we had one particular Drill Sergeant who would flash on us constantly. So one of my peers writes in the letter “Drill Sergeant such and such is a ****bag.” Of course the said Drill Sergeant received this letter from the CPT. That following morning he literally smoked us for 2 hours straight until our Drill Sergeants from our respective company came to retrieve us for day zero. Good times lol

In Marine Boot Camp in 1963 the Drill Instructors asked for a vote as to " non smoking or Smoking". The result was Smoking. The DI's then smacked around a couple of recruits and asked for another vote. We became non-smoking.
